engine blown

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by chris bourner, Feb 23, 2014.

  1. oh and dont forget to get specific cost that you 'could' be liable for during the meeting.

    E.g:

What are Ducati Leeds going to charge for the strip down?

you want an exact figure, not a plumbers quote of 'ooooohhh, it could be this or it could be that'

  2. At the moment I'm not at home so i'll av to wait until I get home at weekend to start making phone calls /emails etc

  3. just a wee side topic. blown engines are quite rare. but two customers of mine have had rods come through the block in last 3 months started as a knock after going through flood's lasted a few days then pop. not suggesting this was your experience but water is gonna bend your con rods.

  4. I don't get it? Does the belt need changing at 10,000 miles? I thought it would at least be at 24k

  5. No it was a nice dry day, no knocking no warning at all.

  6. 15k I believe, ducati leeds couldn't tell me why it was done as they hadn't done the work, these are the things I need to find out.

  7. It should be on the DCS (Ducati Communication System) that all official dealers are plugged into. Enter the VIN number and hey presto all work done on your bike by authorised dealer should come up. Belts are at 15000 miles so odd this was done at 10k!
If you get your engine inspected by an independant mechanic with a mind to redress from Ducati the inspector must be approved by both parties. It can't be a mate saying, 'yeah, it looks knackered in there, here's my note to say so'. If the inspection shows that it was a component failure (fatigue) or a fault not caused by you then you have a case.

  8. The girl at ducati leeds was on the computer and said she didn't know why it was done, I'll be ringing the dealer (Manchester I think) first thing Saturday.

  9. Service and maintenance is not logged in the DCS, just warranty work. So a service history, can not be found there.

    • Agree Agree x 1
  10. Can't you trace the previous owner from the log book and ask, I'm sure he wont mind telling you.

  11. I think Ducati should pay you to rebuilt it Steve!

  12. Or maybe just build a better engine to start with!

  13. Well second hand engine bought it's going to "Ducati John" to be sorted next weekend :)

  14. Good luck buddy, hope it all goes well. Don't give up with the claim though.

  15. Its time as well as distance specific. But if a belt didn't snap it irrelevant anyway. A belt change wont stop a big end failure, i would guess...

  16. I appreciate its your business but why have you spent the money on a 2nd hand engine (couldn't have been cheap) when things could still quite easily be rectified yet with Ducati? I realise you're yet to get a definite answer but going on whats been said so far I'd of thought it highly plausible that following a conversation with them and pointing out all the service history you've mentioned that headway could have been made.

They'll only pay for the engine work associated with the bike that's had the problem so haven't you jumped the gun a little bit here?

Again its your business but now you've had to spend on a 2nd hand engine, will have to spend on workshop labour with 'ducati John'.... Wouldn't it make more sense to follow through the first engine blow up as from what information we have so far i'd say your in a pretty good position for negotiation?

  17. he just wants to get back on the road. strip the engine later once the engines out the dudes at ducati will have it striped in an hour. will be worth the labour just to find out.

  18. At least by going 2nd hand engine route you will be back riding in a week and also will then be easier for ducati to strip the blown engine to find cause , I would have done the same as then you can use the bike but will also be good to get to the bottom of the blown engine and then if ducati cough up you can sell one to get your money back or keep the bike forever as you will have a good spare lump , this could be for the best as you haven't got to miss the summer waiting for decisions

  19. I think Chris has done the correct the thing buying the engine , this argument could go on for ever between the dealer , ducati uk and the owner ..........bite the bullet and move on .........would you like to have no motorbike for the whole of the summer ???
They are under no obligation to fix it ....wasnt there a missed service ??? yeah but good will .........yadder yadder ......"well i wouldnt buy another ducati again blah blah " ok so what !!, Ducati are selling more bikes than they ever have , do you really think they care about one bike thats knocked its leg out , how many multistadas have been sold that have not failed .

Perhaps when the bike is back on the road see if the dealer wants the engine to strip it and see what has failed , at best you could get a part payment to what you had to spend on the used engine and labour to fit, or they will say something in the bikes life has caused it to fail or at worst you will have to pay out even more dosh for the dealers labour to strip it .

Carry on with your plans Chris and have a smile when your riding in the sunshine (hopefully) .....your funds being a couple o grand less mind but as Forest Gump says " shit happens "

  20. well i guess if the money isn't an issue then why not, unfortunately for me it would be but i guess if i did have the cash lying around id at least consider doing the same.

Do continue to follow up with Ducati though as above have said it could either give you a 2nd motor to sell or keep.
