Engine confusion

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by He11cat, Jul 21, 2013.

  1. I couldn't have put it better, but some prick sidetracked me...........

  2. I'm going to sleep on this matter tonight .
I am in hospital tomorrow and want to get that out of the way ..
    Then have a think ..
Probably means il loose every penny

  3. I wanted to strip it down have a look if 400 keep bits for my 400 engine .

    2. Reasons I changed my mind .

    1. I'm broke right now I got pretty sick this year with 2 things and lost a lot of money trying to get better.
I'm. Currently trying to get treatment on the NHS .. Can have it private but at £590 plus travel every 12 weeks ..no can do.
Having a battle with NHS who have failed me badly with a few mess ups like not forwarding on my notes ( one of the hospitals just named and shamed on TV lost my stuff ) .. Promising stuff then nothing again setting me back 2 years.
So the amount of sickness I went through this year and hosp admissions and now this year it's
    No treatment ..I'm
Going to Loose my job .. If I don't get sorted.
I was at the point where I was not functioning.

    2. The other week I went to do basic maintenance and things have progressed so much I couldn't as much as undo my oil filler cap even with pliers. Nor my valve caps.
I'm loosing strength rapidly in my hands.
I can use my levers as been lightened up for me as have my clutches on bikes.
Time to copper slip everything even the jam in the fridge!

But it's hit home I'm struggling.
Which for me is frustrating as I have always looked after myself!
    I'm really stubborn.
I actually can't even say to someone please can you help ?

So there it is .. I don't think I will now be strong enough to start stripping an engine.
I'm going to try and strengthen up my hands somehow .
    But that's the score.
Fed up as go to work , yeah it's a struggle but I'm not sitting on my arse like some people I know who tell me don't bother working your be better off :(
Then laughing cause they have perfected the "I'm too ill to work game" when they are not and then laugh about it.
I actually can't physically now take apart an engine.
Used to be able to !
But now sometimes my hands go numb and I can't undo anything !!
    So 1broke at mo
    2. Too sick to pull apart engine I even got jar openers to try and use to get stuff apart

  4. So that was why I went to sell it .
Skint and in reality I'm not going to be spannering :(
What hope is there when this idiot can't get her oil filter off with a tool!
Then her valve caps and oil cap :(

  5. Just a quick question for those that have all the answers!

If I holed a crank case on my engine and went to Ducati and bought a brand new pair of cases, would they come already stamped with a number, and if so, what would it be?

    Just asking like...

  6. How much did you pay for it Hellcat?

  7. FFS antonye..........read the thread and my posts.................this is what I am saying all along.......there is no effing number on a replacement crankcase, because it isn't an engine.

  8. That was my point ... but it wasn't a question for you

  9. I think its now been established that the motor is not going to be used for the intention Mel was going to use it for.

Also seems that the engine may be a bit iffy but maybe not, as was said if you put new cases on they wont have a number stamped even if direct from Ducat so.....the next course of action is to identify the engine so Mel knows what shes got then she can decide what to do from there.

I personaly would say that its going to be impossible to prove its iffy or straight, how can it be proved ? it cant be.

So to that end can we not all have a nice big group hug and see if we can do something about Getting Mel at least some of her dosh back

Come on People huddle up !!!

So...engine ID ? maybe more Photos Mel ?

  10. OK....Polly-gees........

.....but taking it on from your post............If I bust my crankcase and fitted a new replacement one with no number on it, I would be perfectly justified in stamping my original engine number onto the new case........

....but what I find bizarre, is why someone would nick an engine; file off the OEM number, making a good job of the surface and then go and stamp a number on there which appears to all of us on here to be 'wrong'..........??

Why not, after all the preparation involved cleaning off the old number, just leave it 'clean' with no number like a replacement case would be instead of bodging up a number, particularly with the wrong 'digits'......

.....it doesn't seem feasible that someone who had the punches to stamp a number on it, had lost his '4' and '6' punches, so he used a '5' instead..........

......and if it was a new case with no number, why use the 5 instead of the 6 (or 4) unless maybe it is a 400 hogged out to 500 or a 600 sleeved down.....

Wierd, regardless of what the engine is and whether dodgy or not.

  11. my recollection of Phil is:
    * good guy
    * lives and breaths bikes
    * could cross the world on a c90 as he could use a coat hanger to repair a broken piston
    * had bike shit everywhere!!

Cant see him dealing in nicked bits, but can see him buying boxes of 'tat' at bike jumbles in the hope and expectation something will be of use

  12. If you do not need the crankcases strip the engine, use the parts that you need, learn from the experience and move on. It sounds like you have made an honest mistake.

  13. @ Chris - I think my last post stands for itself. Don't get so defensive - I never mentioned you... The important thing is that Mel needs help - not a lot of ill-informed "advice" and bickering / name-calling from people who should know better... If someone is happy to buy this engine from her, knowing there may be doubts about its history, then please do it now and safe her a lot of bother and heartache.

  14. Hi Chris......I don't think he was popping at you......and for the record, I think your summary at Post 53 sums it up pretty well.......as you rightly say, nobody actually knows at the moment.......

.......although I have to repeat what I said in my last post.............if someone went to all the trouble of removing an engine number, why on earth would they punch a '5' instead of a '4' or a '6' when the '5' quite obviously draws attention to it??
