A very interesting post, many valid points made here. Some points I would like to make when considering the quality and effectiveness is the change in the make-up of oils to stop the cat converter being destroyed. this happened around 2008 with the change to SL and greater grade oils, these oils have reduced amounts of heavy metals and ZDDP, These earlier oils are still available but are branded as race oils, this does not affect some motorcycle oils so I cannot comment on each individual oil, this post is not done to cause offence or to say what is better than what but some members do run bikes with cats and they need to be aware of the differences in the additives and their results if used. On a personal note, I use AMS OIL Dominator range, this is a Triple ester oil which is considered to be one of the best available, I have used 15w50 and 10w30 and will be trying their 5w20 when I can get some, I have had no issues with either, I have no cat to consider or wet clutch, of course wet clutch is just another consideration.
just a thought couldn't a dealer buy a big drum of shell 15 50 or the motul 300v oil and then break it down and sell it in 4/5 litres containers……
I used to shift a lot of the shell like that Andy. It's only available in 1 litre and 209 litre drums so made sense for people wanting that specific brand and grade.
I cannot see why anyone, dealer or not, would want to have their leg into a 205 litre drum of 300v. or any other high value oil. if the price were a maximum of £10 per litre (which it aint!) that will be £2050 please! then start buying tubs to put it in? I did this once with smaller 25l amounts and it never seems to work out / add up. of course you then need 50 customers ready and willing to pay or the oil just sits there.
Does oil have a shelf life out of interest ? If you did 0 mileage in a year the schedule still calls for the oil to be changed ?
IMHO Some are worse than others, at the real poor end of the scale are castor based products that start to age when the lid comes off, some are meant for long term storage. but with most regular oils i think a good dose of common sense is required. i also think that it is important to regularly start the motor and let it run, say every 3 months. under those circumstances i think up to 5 years is acceptable but dont just then go and ride the bike without changing the oil.
I spoke with Tom at snells during the week, as my bikes under the mileage for 1st service, but its a yearly thing, I told him I might change the oil prior to service and get them to leave it, but he said bring the oil and filter ( that I had bought from them) along and they would do it, as that way the book and service records are up to date. so the service would be £££ minus the oil I bought from them
No surprise Snells being so helpful! Agree this is a lot of hassle but price wise there is potential....actual example: Shell Advance 4T Ultra 15w50 1ltr £9.78 209ltrs £1709.48 equiv £8.18 ....ok you're not going to get rich on the deal and once you have your own markup on top the resale price wouldn't be that much better than standard retail. Of course it's possible that trade or wholesale discount could be available to some on the 209ltr buy. Still no takers for my offer?..........oh well no biggy....that's the next 3 oil changes taken care of
After a bit of a ring round I have found someone who may order a quantity of motul 300v or whatever is wanted, now I don't want to tread on AndyW's toes so if you all can decide on what exactly you want I will make some enquiries. if you cannot decide the deal that AndyW is offering is a good deal, I cannot touch that price but shell is not for everyone. Whilst making my calls I have come across a 205litre barrel of Morris oil fully synth, I am awaiting the spec but am told I could be around £6.50 a litre if the whole barrel was purchased, any comments here? Andy, I have pm'd you and left my number if you want to have a chat.
