Excessive wind ('uncledons' wings/wind deflectors)

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by chickenman, Aug 27, 2012.

  1. Managed to fit the Wings today. Jeez, what a job!

Had to fit the right hand inner without the washer - quite a quick job, just the four hours . it was a nightmare getting the inner bolts lined up, it seems not everyone has the same issue. Pot luck I guess

It'll not be ridden for a while so I'll have to wait to see the results. I hope they are worth the effort. I've got the short Puig screen fitted, anyone else got any feedback on this setup?

    Cheers

  2. Would be interested to hear your thoughts as I'm considering this set up.........

  3. Ok...tried the wings with short screen and can't find much of a difference with or without it, looks better with them on tho...so will try with DP touring screen and see if any difference?

  4. Sorry if I've missed it but what short screen do you have and do you use the Aztec spacers? please let us know about the DP screen too

  5. The cut down standard screen I found best, had the PP one as well but they are all the same IMO

  6. I am really unimpressed with the noise of this bike, I have a Schuberth C3 lid and was planning to buy the integrated comms collar, unless I can get rid of the terrible noise there is no point as I won't be able to hear it!

  7. Wouldn't panic too much ape, I have the c3 with scala and wear earplugs and can have conversations and listen to music with speeds 80mph plus (on continent;) ......... Earplugs does away with 90% of the noise no matter what screen you use, especially with schuberth lid.......
My advice would be not to buy the integrated scala collar and just buy the g4 or g9 as the range is twice as far and signal far better with the aerial up

  8. What plugs do you wear mate? I'm not fussed about bike to bike range as is mainly for GPS radio and iPod as well as comms to my wife on the back of the bike lol I actually have the c3 pro which has the integrated antennas to extend range improve reception

  9. Just the cheapie coloured Oxford ones about £3 for 2pair in small round box....best there is and I tried loads , you should get a month or more out of a pair riding couple times a week.

With them in, music on scala at half volume I can just hear music, with slight droan of quat D's in background and no wind noise at motorway speeds etc.....

I think there's that much talk about wind noise on this forum that most people actually try hard to focus on hearing it rather than realising they are out on a bike and you should wear earplugs just to limit any external noise.

  10. I'm going to look in to ear plugs too, been for about a three hour ride today and my ears are actually sore now, not good, need to look after my hearing, this is one of the reason's I bought the C3 Pro, kinda feel like I should have just bought a cheaper helmet and some custom ear plugs

  11. Mine have arrived. Will fit them this weekend and see what they are like with the MRA Touring Screen. On the subject of ear plugs. I had some custom made recently. Best investment for £70. Cuts out the damaging levels of noise but can still hear Mrs W in the Sena. everything else we buy for our bikes is expensive. Why scrimp on something as important as your hearing.

  12. I'm just scoping out brands now, which company did yours? So far Ultimate Hearing Protection Systems are looking good, prices seem to be coming in around £100 though?

  13. Here in Saltash we have a NHS "Walk in" Hearing Centre on the High Street. It's basically just a tarted up hearing shop. very knowledgable about bikers needs though.
her's a link to see where your local place may be

Providing the finest hearing healthcare via local hearing aid centres

  14. I used these people for mine

    Link removed - matt

Got filters in, so can still use the nav, music and hear the mrs on the back using the intercom, but no bad wind noise

Not the cheapest, but wouldn't ride without them now!

  16. I spent about 90 minutes at them today and got nowhere. Like you I can't get the inner screws to line up. I can get the screws to thread without the wings so I can see the angle required. I can get them to thread without the washer but no way with the washers on. As pointed out the original screws are machined down at the end to aid starting so I tried grinding a shallow chamfer on the end of the supplied screws to see if that would help but still no luck. I'll try again tomorrow.:frown:
I'm also using the short Puig screen. The wings seem to want to sit in front of it. They will sit behind but the screen touches them, although once they are fitted properly and tightened up it may not. Any ideas? Between the screen and the bracket? Or in front of the screen?

  17. Definitely between the screen and the bracket Derek,

  18. Thanks Bob.

  19. Fitted mine yesterday and the day before and the day before that:frown: in all had 4 goes at it and nearly binned them. To be honest I'm a little disappointed as I had to use a heat gun to remould them then drill the grommets at an angle also use longer screws. All in all a bit of a struggle, still after the first ride yep it was worth the effort.

  20. I ended up removing the rubber grommets and used some nylon washers - made for a much easier job - 5 mins a side
