I get 100 free listings from eBay, I have both a business and a personal account. It changed a few months back. The free listings are for very basic listings so any extra photos, headlines etc. etc. cost extra so your free listing isn't that free. eBay is pretty poor at policing it's policies and they are not that good at searching out scammers but at least they are better than Gumtree and you do have a chance of getting your money back from eBay. eBay itself gets taken for a ride all the time with shill bidding and people making false claims for items covered by Paypal etc. The fact is, like banks, they can take the hit because of the profit they make. The only real loser is the person who falls for these listings, puts down a "deposit" or whatever and loses his cash and that is not right. Craig's List got hit really badly on the property rental front a few years back with scammers duplicating listing for genuine rentals and then taking a deposit and then doing a runner with the cash. I came across one in the UK exactly like that as my business was fronting the money for an employee to get accommodation and move nearer to the area. It was only the clerk as Western Union who spotted it. Now if the person had come to me and told me what they were doing and how they were transferring the cash it would have rung alarm bells straight away. I have been testing a surefire way to rat out scammers who approach me, I get about 20 plus attempted scams per day!! and so far only one idiot has come back to me and no doubt that is because he was very stupid, the rest have never gone any further or made any other contact.
