Guthrie Govan - The Persuader - YouTube

Learnt all his licks from Bert Weedon so i'm told.........

  2. I know, and from experience is true of a lot of things in life.

But I wonder if "That's not as easy as it looks" has already been taken as an epitaph?

  3. The brilliant thing about the guitar (as so many other things) is that, although it isn't as easy as it looks, it's still quite possible to do if you practice. Wilco's "thumb over" technique looks natural and simple. What is tricky is getting your first finger to hold down the first 2 strings and the others not so flat that they don't touch them. Hendrix and John Frusciante, to name but two people, use this technique devastatingly effectively to accomplish all sorts of things that are hard if you don't use it. But loads of players never really master it. And it should be said, loads of brilliant players don't seem to have the need for it.

That's not really the point though. What's important is that by some diligent study of the guitar (and you have a lot of fun doing this) you can create music and fantastic sounds which, if you never bother to pick up the thing - because you think "Oh, I could never be Jimmy Page (probably true), you will never do. It's like not wanting to play football because you think you'll never be Lionel Messi. Do you have to be Messi to have fun playing?

I started playing the guitar aged 49, having previously played nothing and with the knowledge of music theory that i learned in school aged 12. I just think it's one of the best things i've ever done. A source of constant joy and stimulation. I now play in a band with mates. We may be terrible, but he have a great time. Certainly beats looking at The X Factor.

If I were Viv, I'd not sell the thing - I'd learn to play it (loads of fantastic free or inexpensive tuition on the net). And I'd encourage anyone to spend less time polishing their Ducati and more learning an instrument.

  4. I see your not adverse to strumming your g-string

  5. I learnt to play the guitar at primary school not that long ago really :)
I used my dads guitar to learn

I'm not really a guitar person I do like watching others play though and if I did learn I would like the bass guitar

  14. I saw the post when I was trying to find a thread I can't remember the name of, but was probably in Speakers Corner, but saw no threads at all in Speakers Corner. Don't I have access to it or has it been discontinued?
So how come you didn't get a Strat, rather more comfortable? It wasn't even red!

  16. I went snorkeling off Halkidiki (or however you spell it. It was a while ago). It was enchanting, so clear, colourful reasonable size fish, coral. Years later I found out Great Whites go in the Med, so I won't be doing that again!
