Fighting A Losing Battle

  1. Id say find someone local - there are 2 local outfits close to me (I tend to go to one of them now as the lad in there has a bike so we have a chat) the reason I say is that when I go in - I can cast me eye around and buy stuff that I never though existed in stainless plus other stuff which jogs my memory - now, whatever bike I own - invariably it gets covered in stainless....although im ducless at the moment I wont be for long so ill be going through it all again, but im thinking the next one is going to be a keeper so ill probably get the engine out, stripped blueprinted and then coated....

  2. I'm not sure if this puts a spanner in the works, but my 848 just dissolved in 3k miles and I looked after it really well, with ACF50 etc and didn't ride in the winter very much. My Garage has quite bad ventilation and condensation was an issue. In fairness though I am finding my 675R with 9k miles on has pretty much every bolt corroded on the fairing and brake calipers etc! but I have only had it for 3k so no idea how it was looked after previously.

I rode the demo 899 from my local dealer, it's done 900 miles and no doubt left outside and not cleaned often enough but the yoke center nut was completely rusty and the rear brake disc (sensor ring and disc mount) was minging along with the front disc. They wondered if I was interested in buying the demo but honestly it's too rough for me.

I am going to have to ride the bike much more when I finally get my 899, but I am resigned to having a 'summer' fairing kit of bolts and maybe even splashing out on a fancy chain. I shouldn't have too but all manufacturers seem to be pushing there luck with fasteners. I just hope that stuff like the fork legs and big components don't dissolve.

  3. My advice would be to go over it with as much stainless/titanium as poss, also, semi strip it and get all of the hidden stuff powder coated....eg on my hyper is was the guide that the brake lines run through - the rocker covers, sub frame, the mount that held the rear termi...etc etc...on my zed it was the mount that held the light, some lower exhaust brackets, rear brake caliper tie bar and some other stuff...had a small carrier bag full and each time it cost me 30 quid per bike....made it easier to clean and looked loads better and when I sold it 2 years later - looked just the same...

  19. The 250exc is all good but the 620 Supermoto is still a bag of bolts. I'm struggling to find time to work on it. I might have to just get rid as it's one of the few things left in storage and it's costing me more than it's worth.

  20. Supposed to make it more resilient to rain washing it into the drains. So now the roads in Winter are even more dangerous. Thank goodness for the Bosch IMU :Finger:
