Fighting A Losing Battle

  1. Shame - well, they always seem to go for strong money...I think if you broke it up youd probably get more...especially all the supermoto parts on there....sourcing all the sm stuff for my 525 was a right pain in the arse...and im still not finished....just to get the shock lowered correctly will cost 160 quid...money pit and ive not even ridden the bloody thing yet.
     
  2. Thats interesting to know as it is getting to the point where I could do without the stress of it sitting there. I really wanted to get it running simply because I've never managed to successfully do an engine on a car or bike! It always ends up as a bag of bolts due to the time needed to get it sussed out.
     
  3. Well, I know im in Bristol but there's a lad locally to me (literally a mile away from our house) who works for a company called GMB. Strangely they rent out and service mini buses, and, prep cars for rallying and also MX and enduro. The lad that I know Andy, is an ex KTM factory mechanic...he worked with the KTM MX race team and went round the world with them, so, he knows his stuff. he rebuilt my engine....if youre not in a hurry for it you could box it up, send it and let him rebuild it...just an option....I know there are loads of mechanics out there but its nice when theres a recommendation...
     
  4. I dont think it's worth putting money into as the 620 SMC are known to be made of cheese and fairy dust. I've been keeping it as a personnel project simply to get experience of the rebuilding seeing as it's a near write off. The actual old engine is not worth rebuilding, and the replacement engine is an unknown factor but hopefully will be ok. It wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't last long either though tbh.

  6. having said that if you get a silver engine - as long as its working it may (if youre planning on keeping it) pay to have it stripped and rebuilt while its out of the frame. When I did mine I was chatting to KevInYorks on the ktm forum and he very nicely gave me a parts list of internals that had been upgraded so, while it was apart I ordered them, gave them to Andy to build into the engine while it was apart. Result: a much more reliable engine that's less likely to fail. There weren't many parts (about 6 or 7 from memory) all internal gearbox stuff - came to about 60 quid or so...im not saying its the same for your motor but ktm's tend to share quite a lot of stuff between the ranges...
