Fighting A Losing Battle

  1. The D.I.D gold chains are supposed to be very good and don't rust up as easily. Fingers crossed as I have one on order :)

  2. Just to add a bit of weight to it - heres the first thing I got coated (the front rad mount)....this was a week after I owned the bike. 4.8k...

And after I got it done....

And since its been done not one bit has flaked off....the rear mount that holds the termi on was in a worse state...didn't take a pic of that but I should have done....the pre done shot...if it looked like that after 20k and a life being used in all weathers then I would have expected it and been happy at that...

  3. That is shit I bet it's down to some bloody bean counter in purchasing, we've known for donkeys years that Ali's notoriously difficult to keep a coating on without special treatment, all those extra stages of pickling & etch priming cost money but are absolutely necessary to stop oxidisation & flaking paint. They've probably just been sent to a jobbing powdercoat company who to get things down to a "competitive" rate miss these critical stages out. How the hell does this stuff get through QC !

  5. Chain looks good red rust

  6. It's looking even better this morning.

Believe it or not chain is smothered in lube. Jokes innit. I'm beginning to think it's something to do with the exhaust heat and the lube and the salt. Other bike still sparkling!

If it wasn't getting changed that would be two hours of my life sorting that shit out.

  7. Back in the 80s when I bought my first Pantah, the difference in detailing compared to my previous Honda Superdream was to be seen everywhere. Allen bolts instead of crosshead screws made of cheese, just everything nicer and more expensive. And this, I thought, was where my money was going, seeing as a Pantah 500 cost the same (or was more expensive) than a Kawasaki 1000.

Spool forward 3 decades and the price differential still seems to be in place, but now the detailing is actually worse than the Japanese competition. This does need some explaining.

  8. No substitute for a cleaning regime, you would like to think, but ultimately even a Panigale is built to a budget. The only effective solution is to change the fasteners out for stainless or titanium ones. I appreciate that is not the most cost effective remedy, but it is about the only one that will work in the long term. As for the chain I use a dry chain wax which has always proved successful

  10. well like I said - the chain on the bike from new never rusted (2012) the OEM replacement under warranty in 2014 went red in a week - in the summer -

So it aint just your cleaning regime or salty roads

I bought a Renthal gold one and if anyone wants to buy an OEM chain with about 100 miles on it there's one in my garage :p

  11. yep - that looks awful...that termi has seen better days as well....how old is that....couple of days!

    Is that clean!!!
Get some wd40 on the wheel
Or are you just back from a ride

  13. The whole point of black wheels is that you don't need to be arsed to clean them.

  14. Just back from work commute on it so the wheels and termis are covered in crud. Look worse due to the thick layers of acf on them though.

  15. Seriously....its not a good advert for someone considering a purchase....

  16. its not just the chain, the cans look the worst ive seen, the sprocket, carrier, nuts, its all wrecked!

  17. Had my heat shield replaced under warranty for exactly the same issue.

  18. Ha, my Monster is the Dark version so I revel in this! :)
Seriously though, my Honda VFR750 '96, Monster 600 '01 and even my cheap scoot Honda Innova '03 show hardly any corrosion despite riding almost daily through winter and only 1 coating of ACF50 after a wash in mid December for the VFR and Monster. Why Ducati can't match or more expectedly excel in these areas is baffling?
