Fork upgrade

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Baldyboy, Dec 28, 2013.

  1. Any idea how much that cost mr r?

  2. Full article on ss forks by Rupert Paul in this months PB mag.
    Very good.

  3. Wassy, does he go into the modding of them?

All, when K-Tech do the 4 port mod and the 600cc cartridges do they do this with the SBK internals or stock internals?

    thanks

  4. I'm interested in doing this as the look of the bike is unchanged, which appeals to me as the only obvious mod I'd make is ohlins forks as they're obviously aftermarket rather than a "oh look, xxx forks on that SS" option.

So, Baldy, on flea bay there's a set of sbk forks for around 120 all said and done.

Questions needed answering for baldy and I is...

    1) What machining is required for the sbk internals to fit the SS showa GD021's ?
    2) Does K-Tech's conversion work with the SBK internals
    3) How much pants down dosh will it be for the baldster and me good self?

  5. Full three page article. Covers every aspect of the 900ss forks and concludes that reworked stock forks are as good as anything else out there.
    Budget £500-£600 quid though.

  6. thanks Wassy, still cheaper than a 1k ohlins and all other cocking around with spacers and machining :)

  7. Tue big downside of reworked std one are they are not adj (in many cases) without caps off. Depends if you like an easy fiddle or not...

  8. mine are fully adj with sbk internals and cbr600 cartridge

  9. After reading Rupert Pauls article in PB I just forked out £65 on a pair of slightly bent GSXR750 K5 legs to use the cartridges for my SSie with ST4s legs. Wont be doing the conversion till next winter tho.

  10. Great article helped out no end in my decision making process. Don't want to be spending £600 and reading it you don't have to , to get a great performing front end.

  11. Cranker, not having bought the magazine yet, do you have to machine the forks on the SS in order to accept the super bike internals or are they a straight swap?

  12. Sev if you pm me your email addy will scan and send as a PDF well worth reading

  13. No machining, but a fiddly to build up using sbk and ss bits and cbr600 cartridges

  14. If I had some spare cash, I would have them.............I seem to spend a lot on suspension............but none seems to cure my problem..........

.............I'm a heavy shorta*se (12 stone and 5' - 6" max) with the greatest weight above waist level..........so whatever bike I ride, even under fairly light front braking, my weight gets flung forward and almost regardless of dive, my weight comes off the rear wheel, so the damn thing will hop (or skid if I use any rear brake) at the rear at speed...........that's why I never progressed far with racing solos.

  15. The GSXR K5 legs I bought for internals are too long for my ST4S legs. The conversion described in Performance Bikes this month(that makes Showas perform as good as Ohlins road and track) will only fit the longer SSie legs. Anyone wanting to upgrade their SSie forks? I got the bits:mad:.

  16. Man bet your spitting , didn't think about it but of course he has the lesser ss the I.e. ;)

  17. If anyone is interested in doing what I have done I can get a kit made up for you to fit 999 forks, it's what I am running on my 750ss.

It isn't as easy as changing the internals, but now I have adjustable forks and a bike that runs rings around others, offset changes slightly but it works as it seems to drop in quicker, just makes it feel like it has flat tyre when going slow.

    You need
    748/999 forks
The tool I have for milling the top yoke out
Spacers made for the bottom yokes
    4 spacers for the brakes.
    Clip ons
    Mudguard

As for the top clamp bored out

  18. When you say the offset changes slightly, how so?

Those shims for the bottom yoke look great, any chance of a quote for a pair?

  19. That's what I was thinking.......I must be thick because how can the offset change?......

.....the sleeves appear to concentric within the original holes which appear to have been milled out concentrically, therefore the stanchion must be on the same centreline; therefore the offset hasn't altered.
