Agreed. The front edge of the fairing actually hooks around the front of the radiator surround to hold the front edge in place. Although from memory there are a couple of tabs on that front edge that stick out further than the surround itself... so if you removed or reduced those, potentially the front of the fairing would be slightly further back.
