Nope, in fact my KTM660 shenanigans are well documented on the ktm forum.... http://www.ktmforum.co.uk/supermoto/177078-starting-660-comedy-thread.html Read on and have a laugh....youll see the break point when the fuel is changed over...if I had room in the garage and the wife wouldn't divorce me id get another at the drop of a hat...
He's gone European on us.... In all fairness the KTM was a real pain to start....the starting procedure is very precise but, the change of fuel made the difference.....I should know as it took me 6 months to get the starting procedure down...but, again the tipping point was the change of fuel...
Haha so myself & comfy share the same delusion... You know, thats cool enough so long as he starts his bike easier & mine runs better overall...
Im sure there is differences in fuel qualitys from the different brands but just a little story ......... I used to work at a petrol station/repair shop circa 1985 the older chaps here will remember when we used to have 2, 3, 4 and 5 star petrols , the owner of the place was one dodgy character and had loads of fiddles on the go , i only found this out when i left there but he used to give the fuel tanker driver a back hander and all the tanks got filled with the cheaper 2 star fuel !!. The amont of folk who used to fill the xjs jags and v8 rovers and all the big guzzelrs of that age with the more expensive 5 star fuel and swear how much better they run on the full fat stuff .......makes me giggle .......the gaffer must of made a few bob over 1000s of gallons of fuel also hahaha As i say i do think there is different qualitys in the fuels nowadays ..........just a little tale to think about !
I always use super in the bikes. I am convinced premium fuel has less ethanol than supermarket crap and more importantly, I'm certain the bike pops and bangs more on overrun with SUL and that's a must for me. The higher octane myth about improved power is worth researching. The higher octane doesn't mean more power as much as a different burn profile for the fuel and I think the bike suits the profile of SUL better, it does lead to unburnt fuel which creates the bangs and flames on overrun - a good thing. I'd never use some Sainsburys boggo unleaded, watered down with Ribena and sold by some spotty oik with testicles yet to descend - my bikes and I deserve better.
More power from higher octane is a myth. Higher compression engines require higher octane for prevent detonation and as we all know increasing the compression increases the power. Using a higher octane that the engine needs is a waste of money and generally lower octane fuels ignite more easily. Years ago at the IOM I came of the ferry on my DBD34 with an empty tank, having had it sucked dry by ferry operators, the guy at the filling station outside the ferry terminal filled it up with 2 star! My Goldie had never been so easy to start but it ran shockingly badly and I had to keep the lever half-retarded at the slightest hill. That said, these premium fuels may have additives that improve the combustion process, but octane alone won't improve power unless the engine has a turbo or supercharger with knock sensors enabling it to run a higher boost, like my Saab Aero.
sorry i posted a wee bit further up regarding premium fuels and easier starting see post 58. cheers mate.
My 1198 knocks out over 150bhp and does the top end of 170mph. I'm fat, talentless and slow. I personally wouldn't notice a few bhp either way to be honest!
