Well I'm yet to give it another go, I've got a mate coming round tonight who quite coincidentally has the nickname Brutus, I shall sit on the bike and he can use the standard wrench and small bar. Failing that I move to the Stillson around the socket + scaffold bar. And failing that it'll have to be rattle gun time ........ Oh the joys of wheel removal
[QUOTE="990Glen, post: 394342, member: not wanting to piss on folks chips, but I've never really understood how we get so many threads about a wheel nut.[/QUOTE] Just dont mention tyres, tax discs or Multistrada's going tits up.
if the pipe wrench slips on the nut I doubt you will get a socket/rattle gun on after... Then you'll ave to do what I did a few years back and grind it off.. or sell the bike cheap!
Ahh... wrench around the socket! sorry... That's a bit safer for sure! still selling it cheap is an option
ITS OFF! fooooooking hell, what a bloody mess about. Honestly Ducati...... Single swingers look good but Christ you don't half make us pay for it.
I'd take single swinger over twin any day. Easy peasy compared to lining shit up. And get a impact wrench yer cheap skate!
Is that right Andy? Always gone for not adding grease if it didn't have it in the first place as it affects the torque. My mechanic didn't add any to mine the other week. But then he also managed to undo it without too much arsing about too. First time wheel has been off since new most likely too
I always grease it too. Which means that the torque will be consistent every time it's done up. It should be easier to undo and the thread will wear if it's not greased and being a fine pitch that's not a good thing. Oddly in the manual page for torque settings there is no mention of grease but in the section on re-fitting the rear wheel it clearly states "Clean the mating surfaces and lubricate the threaded end of the wheel shaft with the recommended grease."
greasing the thread will lower the friction, and in doing so likely mean the nut is over tightened. The grease will probably melt over time, and also attract dirt into the exposed thread. It might protect the thread from corrosion, but the dirt that will then be pushed up the thread as the nut is undone will wear it more than anything else, especially if any sand grains get embedded in the soft alloy nut (been there, done that). Clean the threads yes, grease them no.
