Guy Martins Spitfire

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by timberwolf, Oct 10, 2014.

  1. Can you imagine how hard it must be to edit Guy Martins bits to camera?! :D

  2. Maybe they should have used subtitles like they did when he was flying! he seemed less clearly spoken in this programme than in the others that I have seen, not sure if it was me or what but for some parts of his sentences I couldn't understand what he was saying, just sounded like mumbling.

  3. I like him. He's a normal (ish) bloke. He's no PR pro or slick professional presenter. He gets on my tits getting the op do do stuff like this a bit in a envy kind of way, but at least he's likeable. By 'Eck.

I really enjoyed the show. Sure I would have liked to see more about the spit, but it was better than any other of the dross on the other channels and its good to pay respects to the old boys and girls who fought to allow us to moan about things.

I also recommend that Britain Greatest Pilot mentioned previously. What a 'Chap' that Winkle old boy is eh?

  4. Amazing tale! Makes the rest of us look like sedentary, entropic blobs!

  5. I'm unsure if this is in response to my post (the half black colour scheme) to which the aforesaid scheme was painted with one half of the fuselage and wings in black, and the other duck egg blue/ lt grey.
The tandem spit that GM flew in had the invasion stripes, whereas the last shot of a spitfire was the half painted one.

  6. I would trust the duxford experts to get the colour scheme right.

  7. The point is that the last shot was of a half black colour scheme, which I thought looked odd, because I was under the impression that all of our fighters wore a solid duck egg blue underneath, however it transpires that this could very well be an early war scheme, used for one year between 1939 -40?

  8. Excellent programme, only wish it had been longer. Could have made a fantastic series of say 6 episodes.

I loved all the engineering stuff, they did cram a lot into the hour though. I didn't realize the women builders were working 7 days/week.

  9. Yep, indeed it was. I enjoyed it, but would have preferred more on the actual build itself. Although I did like the ME 109 dogfight. Incidentally, that 109 is actually powered by a merlin as well.

  10. The Daily Express? Guy Martin really is turning into Fred Dibnah.

  11. Yep half page spread on page 5 no less....

  12. I've just watched it, absolutely top quality entertainment.

I count myself extremely lucky to say that I spent my work experience at school with the team who look after the spitfires for Rolls Royce. A privately owned mk9 and Rolls own mk19. They are glorious machines in the flesh and the noise up close from the 27 litre Merlin and the 37 litre Griffin V12 engines is truly spectacular.

  13. I enjoyed that part too, Re the Rolls engine:- would make it a post war Spanish BF model?

  14. just watched it really good
agree wish there was more on the actual build though
triggers broom yeah ...........did they use any of the original ?
    doubt anything was usable
but hey another spitfire back in the sky ;)

  15. The Griffon powered Spits have a very distincive engine note which differs from the Merlin powered ones however both induce a feeling of overwelming pride.Sidney Camm's design was posibly more sustainable but RJ Mitchell's one was arguably more pivotal in design terms despite the stats.I defy anyone not to see or hear a Spitfire and not be moved by it.

  16. Very enjoyable but a bit too dumbed down for me with the constant reminders of what we were watching.
"Steel rivets" - my arse. Most unlikely.

  17. Yes mate. The anorak in me thinks it's official designation is a HA 11 something or other.

  18. I agree it was dumbed down, however in doing so I think that the makers appealed to a much wider audience.
