Have I blown it up? :(

  1. That's pretty scary, but well done on catching it before it became a *big* problem!

  2. If this is a known issue with the pistons in this model why on earth would you buy a second hand one ?

Hopefully there is a modified factory option or an aftermarket one that are know to be up to the job but this seems like asking for trouble.

  3. @ Chris - Didn't I suggest a cracked piston at post #11 ? Not wishing to blow my own trumpet or anything...

  8. Best guess gets to buy the head gasket...:upyeah:

  9. I see that you are running the engine with an earlier ECU (ie not an IAW5AM). What mods did you do to the fuelling and Ignition maps? This short article is worth a read about piston cracks U.M.R. Engines

Do you intend doing some investigation on the other piston as a precaution? Using this may save heartache later Flawtek Weld Crack Flaw Detection - Complete 3 Part Kit | eBay

  10. There are probably a gazillion 1098* out there. Maybe one in 200 or so pops a piston. If you're shit out of luck (like I was) it might be you. I always think of the numbers game so I was pretty relaxed about having OEM part fitted. That said, if it were to happen again I'd go for some super duper carlos fandango fuck off ones. And still get dicked on track by some fat old git on a battered 600. Doh...

  13. Welshman says to eskimo broken down on the side of the road 'looks like you've blown a seal' Eskimo quips 'and so what? You lot fuck sheep'

  14. Used part £60 + Gasket £78
New oem - same as fucked old part and second hand part £250 + Gasket
Pistal HC Pistons £645 + Gasket... Plus fueling mapping to suit I'd guess.

Yeah it's a risk....But are all 1098 owners now going to swap their pistons?

  15. Its a risk yes, but you can only do what you can with the funds you have. If you dont have the money then you only have that choice.

However what I will say is that I would do the secondhand piston too in your place but I would have it balanced with the okay existing one at the very least. To make sure the engine remains balanced.

Good luck whatever you decide. :upyeah:
