the question is irrelevant , you cant get in at the tt if you try. it gets bigger every year, and the only hope of accommodation is a tent with drunkards. Nope. the tv is the closest I will ever get.
I really can't remember.... Maybe 15 - 20 of us went camping back in May '79. Far side of the island, there was a pub in walking distance of the layby. We ran races from the layby down the road, onto the straight and at the end turned around and then back as fast as poss. Only place I ever hit 100 on the island was that straight, riding a 400RD. Good times.
Have you ever actually tried?! First year I went (2017) the place we booked turned out to be a huge huge shithole, quick look on booking.com and we had 3 rooms in a hotel in Douglas for the rest of the trip. Second year (2018) we booked a similar hotel about 3 weeks before we got there, again no real issues apart from having to have 'suite' rooms as the normal ones were booked. Not sure I'll go again though, trackday bug has bitten and offers me more fun for the money. Very glad I've been though and would recommend it.
Well there are also hotels and home stays. We usually balance the racing with a bit of tourism / exploring. if you like road racing then it’s one of the big internationals so worth a look.
The mountain section is interesting. When your learning it Its the fast riders that scare you. When your up to speed its the slow rides that scare you. I hear these days it spends more time closed than open. TB
I loved it back in the 80's, haven't been since, my eldest does the Classic loads up his road bike and his off roader and camps. Three of them (one bike each) have booked the ferry already for next year £300, camping is cheap . Happy days.
[QUOTE="JoePeps, post: 1490542, member: 41880" Not sure I'll go again though, trackday bug has bitten and offers me more fun for the money. Very glad I've been though and would recommend it.[/QUOTE] Same here, rather spend the money on doing rather than watching.
My memories of the pub are very blurred. I drank lager and lime, Newcastle brown with Pernod and black poured in the bottle. The smell of whisky made me ill. Such was life as a 17 yearold.
Its on my bucket list. Now further away than ever for distance but that would make it more of an adventure. Maybe more of a possibility now as well, just found out a few weeks back that a mate in this village has an aunty with a house on the island. Only need to ask and he will arrange things for me...
Never been and don’t really fancy it to be honest but have been riding bikes since I was 4. Have been to macau races though and gambled the night away in the casinos which is great but watch out for the lady boys as you get more intoxicated as they can be quite convincing lol
I’ve never been as it goes. Amazing spectacle, would love to go some day. I don’t do camping though and I’m also not a fan of festivals. So the idea of being on an island with strange bike fan types sounds horrendous
Not for a few years yet. I saw Barry Sheene, and others, at the Race of the Year at Mallory in 1978, which he won. Rode my little Suzuki GT185 all the way from Sutton Coldfield there and back. He was my hero when I was 17. Barry always said the IOM was far too dangerous so taking his advice I never went . I still don’t know if he meant the island or the race
My dedit card went to the Macau casinos, sadly I wasn't there and could prove it. Got my money back in a few days.
I’ve been 76,77,78,79 with my dad me as pillion Then went on my own to the Manx in 91 had a mate that moved to the island (unfortunately he no longer lives there) Then took me mates to the TT in 92 & 2002 Then went to the now classic TT in 2015 I would highly recommend the TT but now unfortunately I think it’s just got too busy 92 for me was the best year can’t remember how many times we lapped the circuit I still remember hitting the mountain section only to come across a massive biker traffic jam being impatient I thought I would overtake a few bikers only to find a police car holding up the traffic I could not see why so blasted past what a great feeling. None of the other bikers had the balls to do it as soon as I went past they all started following happy days We also used to make sure we were first out when they opened the roads back up after the racing had finished then chase the coarse car
Yep. I’ve been every 2-3 years for the last 10 years or so, but it’s getting a bit too busy for my liking now. My next trip will be to the Classic. Here’s my bike with a view over the island ... ... and here it is all packed up to leave the campsite
