1200 Heated Grip Wiring

  1. Solder straight onto the original wiring and job done. Why is it Ducati's one's are so expensive again?

  2. I am at home today, so just been out to che k.
Ktm elements are 7.5 ohms, wires soldered directly to the elements.
    Full heat = 12v direct.
Half heat is via a series resistor (didn't check value as it doesn't matter for this post).

I looked at the ducati ones too by rolling back the grip.
They too are printed, but through hole crimped. No continuity on either grip. After turning ignition on, then grips on, off and ignition off, then measured 133k, so definitely output driver circuitry to sense for continuity, and no voltage applied if open circuit.

I think the ducati grips are more money due to the plastic mouldings and different grips. I agree though, they are still spendy compared to others. If mine go wrong out of warranty I will be swapping to something else.

JH I agree. when I do my own grip swap i would be inclined to just cut the existing wiring up near the grip and reconnect to the new elements, and save all the hassle of trying to unplug the cables under the tank

  3. Just had time to do a quick strip down to get a look at the wiring. Panels off, tank off to expose the connections in a big rubber blobby thing, also rolled back the grips to see the connections under the rubber grips where the wires are riveted to the elements. All looks ok, no sign of burning or anything else. Unplugged the connectors to the loom and have tried to get resistance readings by sticking multimeter probes onto the rivets (I am shit with a multimeter and electrics in general, but will try). The right grip is showing 7.5 ohms and the left is showing nothing, so I'm going to assume that the left element has a problem. I've used cheap Symtec kits on dirtbikes with great success in the past but I don't know if the elements are rated the same as these. If they are I'll stick one in and wire it to the existing ducati wiring. Does anyone know how many watts the oem grips are rated at?

  4. They are 18watts on the standard Ducati.
The KTM ones on page 35 look exactly the same.
Ordered the Ducati LHS one today £79+ vat. Comes as complete unit with new grip etc. For the sake of messing around decided to just buy it.
