1200 Heated grips - replacing the grips

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by damodici, Mar 23, 2014.

  1. one thing i have wondered though is IF the heated grip elements ever fail, wouldn't it surely be possible to apply a different manufacturers element and wire it back in to the OEM set up thus retaining the on screen choice etc?

I mean surely all it does is send a different amount of current through to the grips depending on which setting you pick? Therefore as long as the replaced elements could handle the variation is power supply they'd just work the same?

    These for example:

  2. That's what I'll be doing if an element fails. I had these fitted to my ST4s with an old Oxford controller and they were great. The first heated grips I'd ever had, how did I manage for all these years
I replaced the OEM grips with Spider SLR grips. The left hand one was a very tight fit but they were soft enough to stretch on. I don't know how long they'll last though as they are quite soft, but very comfortable and look good in red/black.

  3. Don't see why that wouldn't work, when my "Dr Bike" heated grips failed I kept the controller from them (5 stage) and just bought some cheapy eBay heated elements and wired it all together like a charm. It just changes the voltage output - chucked my multimeter on the end of it during testing to see what happened.
Only difference between those elements versus "proper" heated grips is that the Oxfords and the like have the element inside the rubber so insulate against loss into the bars somewhat. Didn't see any real difference, still hand toasty hands all winter long just the same for the fiver they cost me.

  4. :eek:As I said I think Budha, Knightrider and I have the right answer here, "cricket bat" rubber and no glue is needed. Mine have been fitted for over 12 months with no sagging, displacement or anything. So easy to get on and off, cheap as chips, effective and the heated elements still work brilliantly.
    No brainer to me......;)

  5. Well I went and ordered some Spider grips for the multistrada 1200 specifically with heated grips, they turned up today and only ordered them on the 3rd so 5 days in total, that's really good servicefr om the states

No import charges and just popped through the door so total cost $32.70

Its basically a pair of right hand grips so you get the diameter of the throttle tube for both sides which helps fitting them over the Ducati heated sleeves

  6. evening - sorry missed thread and ur q's - the wire mesh under the grip goes round 90% but theres a gap where the grip is glued that's the bit u lift off and remove grip and glue slowly.

spider grips good, and work well for me the rubber on them is nice and soft, and they don't make the grip too fat, after two months everyday riding I can see some wear around the triangle edge bits but nothing major I reckon they will last and wear nicely and the feel is a little better than the harder oem.

  7. Thanks for the info guys, my left grip has almost worn through and with a 3,000 mile trip around Europe coming up in 4 weeks, I needed something sorted fast.

So I've ordered a black pair of the spider grips! Hopefully it won't take too long to get here from the states.
