Helmet Camera

  1. Have a look at Olfi.co.uk

Pre orders at minute launch next week.
4K Gyro stabilised back lit Sony Exmor sensor. They look very, very good.

I had 2 hero 4 blacks nicked from peli case at airport few weeks ago so need replacements. I should be getting an olfi tomorrow to try. So will be uploading footage at weekend comparing it to all the others.

I've used everything by GoPro, drift and Sony professionally. Each one has something that was slightly annoying. Sony too big but best picture and easiest to grade. Drift too much rolling shutter and GoPro a pain to colour match to main cameras. Also the fact GoPro make over 60% on each hero 4 unit makes you realise their £409 camera is closer to £175.

Ive had a long look and chat with olfi (based on Wales) and their camera is sensibly priced and I'm expecting it will be as good if not better (with gyro stabilisation) than the hero 4. If they had share holders imagine i
They would be charging way more than £150.

  2. Looks a pretty decent bit of kit, look forward to some footage and your review

  3. Looks about the same spec as a Gopro with image stabilisation. 4k is not much use to most people so the much smaller Polaroid Cube Plus will do the same 1080/60 with image stabilisation. Would be interesting to get hold of one and do a comparison between Cube, Gopro black and this all at the same 1080 resolution.

  4. I'll be doing that with hero 4, session, drift ghost s and olfi this weekend. Not in 60fps though 24fps cinema frame rate. Image stabilisation and gyro stabilisation are different.

The benefit of 4K in these cameras is that you can then just point and shoot without worrying too much about framing shots on an app. If your outputting to 1080 you can crop, zoom or move the frame in post without losing resolution. Shooting 1080p means you need to spend a bit of time to get your shot framed how you want it.

  5. I know the benefits of 4k, but have never bothered using it on any of my Gopros. They are action cams which I use on the bikes, so framing shots are no bother, I set it up on my tablet and then ride taking a video. The other problem with 4k is the post processing. I built a very expensive and powerful computer to handle videos and know that any 4k videos will push even that PC to its limits.
I know what a gyro is being an aircraft engineer, but it is a mechanical device which I very much doubt that these cameras have. I concluded that since it is electronic then it may just be a different way of saying image stabilisation. I would love to see a technical description of the two systems.

  6. Had a look at olfi and it looks really good, only downside is no external mic input, I would like to do a running commentary sometimes while filming.
    Good price tho., mmm

  7. Just home to this

  8. I don't think I would like a camera on my helmet.
Besides, the film would be mostly pitch black apart from the odd footage of a urinal or WC.
Nothing more interesting than that I fear.

  9. Throw up some footage in the next few days burndownthedisco. We've eight days before the price rises from £120 > £150.

  10. Ditto...

  11. Here's some in HD and 4K below. Read the descriptions on Vimeo page for settings.

HD shot in mix of resolutions and frame rates. Output to 1920x1080 30FPS

4K shot in 4K 24fps. Output to the same

Will have some on-bike footage over the weekend.

  12. Far too big to watch on my slow internet, and my laptop won't show 4k (nor will my 55" TV) so they may be nice videos but, as I said before 4k is absolutely no use at all to me, and I expect many others.

  13. tbh they dont look as good as go pro 1080 on my mac, plays no problem tho, but cant cope with lighting changes too well

  14. I am a novice in this field, but they look pretty good to me, although as I don't have a 4k tv I can't see much difference between the two. My only gripe is that it doesn't have an external mic input....I would pre order one otherwise.

  15. I had a chat with them about it they are looking at introducing usb one in summer with the next firmware.

  16. Is it retina screen mac or a 5k one? Can tell a difference on 4k monitor but as soon as I put them on macbookpro they look the same.

Agree with you on the lighting but partly my fault probably as I set an ISO limit and lowered the exposure compensation. On default settings I think would cope better.

I'm still mightily impressed for £119. I'd 2 hero 4 blacks, receivers and mounts nicked from airport and when thinking of replacing them always felt I'd paid over the odds for what they gave me.

Will post some riding footage at 4k and 1080 over weekend see how they look.

  17. 3yr old mac. The only retina screen it has is when i get a glare from the french door behind me.

  18. Hi folks here's an onboard again read description to understand settings. I won't be doing anymore tests I'll be using it in a few upcoming videos mounted to the tank for less vibration.

  19. Okay, watched that one. I would say that the colour looked very bleached compared to either of my Gopros, but it seemed stable, that could be down to the mounting. My Cube plus is as stable as this and the colours are better. I'll say again that I only film in 1080/60 as I have nothing that can show 4k.
