@Mattie821 I didn't hear the ambulance I was in so much pain trying to crouch down walk to the verge and I remember feeling sick. I think shock made me numb. I managed to sit in the grass verge. A passing nurse came to me and she supported my back. I had to get my helmet off I thought I would be sick. Ambulance team were brilliant reassuring. I couldn't stand up so they used a sitting board with handles (I think it was) to stand me up to get me in ambulance. Had gas and air to get me jacket off. My collar bone was stuck out due to dislocation they thought it might be broken we didn't know my other was fractured. I was driven back slowly at 40 or less as every bump was painful. Can't remember much about being in hospital apart from the lovely consultant putting my shoulder back in place and the pain easing. Sri Lanka we had a trials bike I guess that's a bit more robust over the mud roads than a Ducati at the time
I grew up in the sixties and seventies, no helmets or seatbelts, touring in France very often without a helmet due to the weather. Nobody seemed to care, not sure I would ride like that now though.
I hate seeing people ride in shorts, T-shirts and no gloves. Last month I managed to totally skin both palms of my hands - not from a bike, from falling over while walking quickly onto gravel over tarmac. I was carrying a box and both hands went flat down. Max speed can’t have been more than 5mph tops but probably less. 7 weeks on they are nearly healed. Imagine that at 30mph? Or 70mph? I won’t go on any bike without proper kit, just not worth it.
@Ducbird - sounds like a bad one, but at least no lasting damage. My leg fracture in my youth I remember hearing the ambulance coming and thinking thinking great - painkillers on their way - and the ambulance went straight past - come back !!. They realised their error and sure enough turned round and came back - but hearing the siren keep on going was - stressful ! Got to laugh at these things..... @TBay - glad you are recovering. Hopefully no lasting damage. A separate point about hands, maybe for another post - when putting your hand out for an unknown dog to sniff as they do - put your hand out as a clenched fist, because if it grabs hold of your open hand you are stuffed - top tip New helmet day !! The only lid I’d quite like right now although I’m not desperate and £600 buys new rear sets or mirrors lol.
I’ve just got this one. Tight to get on - naturally as it’s new - but once it’s on the comfort is like my Shoei X-Spirit and visibility is pretty much as good as my AGV Pista GP RR. Could be a winner, but I’ve not been able to go for a ride with it yet. The visor mechanism is very easy to use as well and it seems to be very good quality. Comes with a clear and tinted visor and a nice carry bag.
Not cheap but not the most expensive. If you do the man maths and deduct the cost of the bag and extra visor that come with it then it’s a bargain! I can justify pretty much anything in my head.
I’m on the list to get one of these in my local shop but apparently still not in yet which is really starting to get on my nerves now lol
I got it direct from their EU website, but I was lucky because my size was the only one they had. I think you’ll find that it is worth the wait, but hopefully not too long!
Interesting. I have seen riders on the MotoGP starting grid wearing Alpinestars, but knew nothing about them as a product available to the public. Thought they might just be a lid made by some other manufacturer, in Wuhan province, and sold with an Alpinestars badge It does look nice that, very nice.
I believe it's a case of marketing being caught flat footed. Clearly didn't know their market and can't supply the demand. Sometimes happens with a small in-house production unit. I need to physically try one on as I have a Shoei shaped head. Andy
I was lucky enough to get one on in October and the first on the list to reserve one, was told 5th feb then the 20th feb and the stand at the excel has said March, thinking I might have to go online and get one now
They may well have underestimated the market. It was also only due for release mid-February and I think a lot of people had been waiting and were ready to jump on them as soon as they were available, hence initial stock disappearing quickly. I find Shoei a more comfortable fit than AGV but I used my AGV on track because of the better visibility. The Alpinestars seems like a Shoei with much better visibility. Hopefully they ramp up production and get them into stores. I’d be surprised if these aren’t very popular.
You can say that about products in every market sector. If the price puts someone off then the product probably wasn’t aimed at that person. There are plenty of cheaper helmets to choose from (and some that cost more as well).
