Highest mileage Duke

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by slumdog, Nov 25, 2013.

  1. I'm really impressed. It makes such a nice change to hear about some high mileage Ducatis, and makes my ambition to get mine up to 100,000 miles sound less crazy. (This week it will hit 30,000 miles, since September 2009).

  2. There's a guy from Glasgow who rides all year round and doesn't drive a car. He has several bikes including a Monster 1000S that has done well over 100,000 miles.
My ST4s was on 48.5K when I sold it. It is still going strong and now over 50K.

  3. Think the winner so far is the good friend of Borgo Panigale ,Sharon with 130000 ++ .

Reassuring news to us all ...

  4. I've never heard of the Nikasil actually wearing out, usually the rings wear out long before the Nikasil does.

  5. Nikasil ..That is pretty impressive !

Still looking for the highest milage Duke , (without a major rebuild) ever !

  6. True, it doesn't wear out but it can lift off, bubble or crack in places.

  7. Agreed, that happened on a Moto Guzzi V50 I once had. It seemed to be a common problem with them.

  8. It's a super early '93 using 888 and Elefant suspension units that were actually left overs from the spares pile and were used up to build the very early models, well, until they ran out and switched to purpose specified parts - it's supposed to be one of the first 100 off the production line and properly encapsulates the term, 'parts bin special'. Galluzzi, the designer, told Sharon that his design had been inspired by watching his kids playing with their Transformer toys and hence he came up with the name, 'Monster'.

She met Galluzzi on 10 September 2000, during a bike trip to Italy at Maurizio's Pompone restaurant Motoristorante "POMPONE" da Maurizio. After a swift drink. Maurizio said, 'Come on, come with us' and she found herself in a group riding to a nearby town. She said they arrived outside an innocuous-looking house and wandered in. It was only once inside, she realised they were in Taglioni's studio!! The ride was a birthday surprise for Fabio Taglioni on his 80th birthday. Out of all the bikes present, Fabio (now on first name terms) selected half a dozen that he'd like as his outriders for the ride back to the restaurant, Sharon was one of his outriders. Back at Pompone, they rode their bikes into the back room and revved their engines, bowing before the great man to a chorus of 'Musica, Maestro, Musica' before sitting down to a banquet in his honour...

So in the words of the San Miguel advert, (albeit in Spanish), Sharon's Monster's miles represent, 'Una vida bien vivida'

  9. What a fab story lucky lady :)

  10. Even more so if chrome rings are fitted as well but aren't run in very carefully...............the friction created will cause the ring to stick to the Nikasil so either the piston seizes; or the ring breaks; or the Nikasil gets plucked up in places...

  11. My 1990 900ss bores did wear considerably after 35,000miles, +.1mm with progressive steps where each ring ended its stroke, Steve Wynne (Sports Motorcycles) advised to put new rings in & forget about the wear... so I did for another 15k before finally boring & replating to 94mm. Now on 92k with no signs of wear.
The original plating must have been questionable & not to todays standards.
