Honda 400/4 Rebuild

Discussion in 'Builds & Projects' started by comfysofa, Feb 8, 2020.

  1. Just seen this so my apologies for the late reply. My suggestion was aimed at using an existing threaded hole where there will be good metal to metal contact between the bolt and frame. Use some dielectric goo for guaranteed contact. Andy

  2. Yep sir - already done - i have the original earthing strap.

  3. Not much has happened recently... Mainly for the reason I've been amassing electrical parts for the build of the loom... Just received the battery... Now a lithium battery is a lithium battery but this one arrived with 4 point which I thought was worth the photo... Never seen that before... Just got connectors to wait for now... 20221231_120021.jpg

  4. Finding out im still in need of more electrical materials to build the loom...ordered bullet connectors yesterday to connect on to the existing switchgear, a few heavy duty ring connectors. Ive got to order a regulator rectifier from the us to match the battery so that might be a while, already got some honda plugs on the way from the other side of the water to extend the R/R wiring to the new home for the new R/R. Stroke of luck but ive found a lad on the sohc forum whose reasonably local and who has wired up an munit to his 550 and is just about to start a 400 as well (fucking score) so hes on hand should i get stuck. Cant do it til the end of the month but the final order will be for a set of rear nitron twin shocks to finish it off.

  6. Should be ready for the spring then?

  7. I would have been hesitant last week due to the steep and unknown curve of building a wiring loom but now ive got some help, yeah i reckon so.....ive got the oem rear shocks but, on its maiden voyage after this resto id like the nitrons on there...homage to my old man....fucking commedian...never told anyone this but it might give some a laugh...my old man was a petrol head (he just couldnt afford to be one when he was young [with a family] ) - my mum sent him out to get the weeks shopping (me and my two brothers were 4,6 and 8) he came back with a packet of biscuits and a Sterling Moss steering wheel (for an old Morris) - didnt go down well....they split up not long after...i could spend the money on a million things but i think he'd like the irony...

  8. Baby steps on the wiring....started sunday. Munit live. WACO connectors just turned up (never heard of them before - cool little things they are!). Depends if i get out there tonight but will be starting on the ignition switch wiring, if not sunday.

  9. Following on from the Munit going live (only a few wires connected but its a big thing for me..!) Connected the ignition up yesterday so rather than putting the blade fuse into the holder to switch the MUnit on i can now do it from the key....Yey me. Made a start yesterday on converting the RegRec to suit the existing cabling.

  10. How’s it been going @comfysofa any recent progress?

  11. Yes, not put anything up for a while....wiring is ongoing....since xmas everything has gotten in the way....weve got a little toyota iq that weve had for 13 years or so that weve put fuel in, and some years do anything the mot requires but this year (around xmas) the clutch started to go long story short about 5 weeks of fault finding and changing the clutch myself (saved a grand) plus then a load of advisories like rear dampers, front shocks plugs and other stuff i uncovered once i started working on it....so its all done now...then our smas developed a weird lights problem which was another 4 weeks of fault finding....then garden work, had a leaky gazebo roof which took forever to fix....meanwhile ive been using my z1000 all through the winter so keeping on top of that has been a challenge (full clean most weeks) as i think this has been the wettest winter for i dont know how long..! so....400/4 - ive got some wiring in, fitted sone aftermarket led indicators - im waiting on some help from another lad whose wired up a few old honda's with motogadget units....but, hes just had 8 grands worth of dental work done so hes a bit out of it...and....factor in (posted elsewhere here) took my rsv4 to APworkshops for a valve check before the TT and it turns out it needs cam chain tensioners which is a full engine strip to get to them...so, ive not got to give the z1000 a full strip and service and a set of tyres for the TT....its either that or the Hyper!!! - as i say...everything has got in the way..! hoping to finish in the next month or so...! essentially my lack of electrical knowledge is holding me back (i cant get my head round integrating the motogadget wiring into the oem switchgear....need a hand!

  12. Work has kinda started in earnest on the wiring. Have aquired some help from a very nice bloke from the sohc forum. 2 steps forward and all that...gonna change all the switchgear to Moto gadget and change the throttle to domino along with the brake master cylinder so that's now all on order. Once I've got that we should be on the home straight...ish..

  13. 16894986723098016422905153240930.jpg Day in the garage today....changing the whole handlebar setup and going full mototgadget...
    1689498703273705232771751636208.jpg
Main reason is last week we had a full day trying to get the oem switchgear connected to the mototgadget munit - too much hassle and more wiring....swtiching to motogadget buttons means 1 wire goes back to the motogadget munit instead of having to connect 17 wires from the oem switchgear. Which meant the throttle had to come out as thats part of the master cylinder...which then i thought id change the bars as the oem switchgear runs inside the oem bars and its tight...really tight so i thought if i pulled that wiring out to reuse the bars the oem wiring would never go back in!....anyway...see what i can get done today...

  14. I could well be somewhat late, but .......

...... threaded inserts, available in various thread sizes & forms. There are two in this picture, the one in the lower left is a M8 insert & the one below the grommet in the centre of the picture is M5. Basically you drill a hole & them crimp the insert in place, the tool is just like a pair of pop-rivet pliers.

  16. Well, after a lad thats been helping me with the electrics and explaining...and explaining and more explaining and me going...."err no...ive no idea what youre talking about..." the other night i got all the switchgear on then had the "Ah ha" moment when it kinda all fell into place so i finished on that high went in the house pleased with myself to go back the next night and make a start....which i did...and none of the switchegear worked...all fucking dead.....its a major faff as the mo.button can bus unit has to go in the bars for rf shielding and the wires are painfully thin/filmsy....so last night managed to get it out, run a set of ground wires from both sides of the bars (all inside the tube) and im back in business (all switchgear working) - carried on (post a-ha moment) as of this point i have a horn, right indicator, front light and ignition switch.....ive got a lot of pc/gaming/server building/reparing going on at the moment so ill be back in the garage tonight hopefully...! no pics but ill take some later on...

  17. Hey there....just to let you know i didnt use the clocks but, they went to a very good home....a lad on the "SOHC" forum has been helping me...we got on the subject of clock wiring and he said "yeah original ones are pretty rare, x is trying to find some at the moment.." so i got the set out that you gave me and handed them over... "shit really! - x will be over the moon" apparently this other bloke on the sohc forum [ive never spoken to him] refurbs clocks but doesnt have a decent set of his own...he now does...so many thanks...its nice to pass the generosity on...

  18. Well, its starting (literally) to come together.....once id connected the motogadget switchgear and got the buttons working the penny dropped on how it worked....very simple....so made a start and ive pretty well got it all wired up now...the only thing left to do (electrically) is to get the neutral and oil light working. I fired it up and it pretty well started first time, leaked a bit of fuel and the tickover is sitting at 4k so one of the lads is coming over in a few days with some vacuum guages to set them up. Home straight...!

One of the lads gave me a link to a site which sells classic car/bike led kits so everything bar the headlamp bulb is now LED.
