Can't help wondering about the necessity of twin discs. Cars only ever have four and manage to stop pretty effectively. Why does a bike need three when it is so much lighter? Removing a disc (and caliper) would not only save weight, it would save unsprung weight and rotating unsprung weight at that. Also tyres can vary considerably in weight, so,it's worth looking at the weights of different tyres as well. Alloy clip ons, too. Shorty levers will be lighter, as will alloy clutch plates and basket, if yours are steel. As said, lithium battery will save a lot. You can also junk the airbox and fit pod filters. Not sure what that will do to power but I suspect the airbox is largely there to kill noise.
I agree with most, however the twin disc setup is there for a reason, why does a 600ss have one and 900ss have 2?
The 750 also has two. I'd love to try both twin and single set ups and see how much difference there is. If someone who has tried both comes on and says the twin disc is way more powerful, then fine but until then, I can't help wondering if it's as much a marketing thing as engineering.
An early (Belt) 750 SS could have a single disc as standard old rider. For road use I found a single disc with the right compound pads is more than adequate on a 750 be it monster SS or elefant but if used as a track bike and constantly ridden hard/particularly in hot weather then twin discs would be preferable.
Lithium battery is already in. New clip ons are coming. short levers are not enough of a weight saver. No way am I taking the front disc off. I note the new Ktm 690 is up to 77bhp with a single disc but it is only 147kg. And my bike has the 1100 Evo motor in it. So the discs stay. Air box may come off one day but that would mean a 250 quid remap as I am not riding it lean
Yes, Chrome moly tube can be made much thinner than alloy, strength for strength, so is often lighter. Steel mountain bikes are often lighter than alloy but carbon fibre does beat both...
FWIW, I'm using (alloy) GSXR clipons, mainly cos they're neater - 250gm lighter than the stock clipons.
For the pair. I sort of expected more, but the bars are solid for nearly half their length. Still, they were cheap!
yes, that's right. my 944 SS was 157kg with still a bit off fuel in it. it was a trackbike with everything that was not needed removed. alot of lightweight parts like:magnesium wheels, lightweight alu swing arm, light akrapovic exhaust systeme, lightweight supermono "style"fairing, carbon fibre fuel tank,... was going to take the weight a bit more down with magnesium clutch cover and other exhaust systeme with one can,but sold the bike before i had the parts on it. i might sell my last carbon SS fuel tank,if somebody wants to save some weight. henk!!!
Fantastic, not the dumpy looking old one then? I was thinking of getting a Kevlar one for my IE actually
the one i have now for sale is a real ducati perfromance one i believe. they don't come up for sale that much,so thinking about 370£. will also have a carbon/kevlar 888 tank for sale. henk!!!
