  1. Nah, there’s an instructor in with you giving one to one. And he lets you find the limits… obvs if you drive like a tit, he’ll pull you up … my son got bollocked…

  2. Has anyone ever tried one of those " Trial lesson in a helicopter " offers ?
..... they usually cost north of £400 per hour ..... on a par with " Rent a Ferrari for a day " .

It's generally a con ..... you are not actually going to be getting any hands-on experience ,
and nor are you going to be getting much of "a lesson " ...... :)
The main beneficiary is the pilot , because if he doesn't log enough flying hours each year ,
he has to get certified all over again .

PS - when I started typing this I'm sure that I had a point to make ....
..... but I'm damned if I can remember what it was now .

  3. I only have a pic taken on the return journey. I did have a few taken outside the headquarters, but dunno where they are now, was a while ago.
    Thread drift...:D

  4. The best colour.

I have a hankering (unlikely to be fulfilled) of a mid 70s air cooled 911 in Orange.

  7. What ?
.... just because there isn't a magic wand visible ?

    That doesn't prove anything ! ...... :joy:

[..... but just kidding around here ]

  8. I travel in helicopters a lot. And sometimes in the front seat. I watch the pilot like a hawk when taking off and landing and also try to figure out all the instruments- there’s a lot. I’ve concluded that flying a helicopter is tricky and something I’d only have a crack at under very close supervision.

  9. Ha-ha-ha... tell me about it.....

Sometimes I think I'm entering what I call the 'goldfish zone'. Ooo look a castellated arch, swim swim, ooo look a castellated arch, swim swim, ooo look a... and repeat ad nauseam.

  11. Really ?

Here's a brief guide in three easy steps ....

1] the left hand is on the "collective" ..... it's just like the handbrake on a car , except it has a bike-style twist-grip
which controls the engine revs , and pulling it up or down controls the pitch of the rotor blades ( to vary the thrust )
2] the right hand holds the "cyclic" ..... pull back and the helicopter climbs .... push left and it banks left
3] As for your feet , they are only controlling the tail rotor speed ..... there's no clutch , brakes etc ..... :D:D
..... push with the left foot and the tail swings to the left

Think back to your very first attempts at a hill start , or a three-point turn , or even parking in a tight space !
You mastered all of them eventually ...... didn't you ?

FFS - prince Andrew managed flying a helicopter just fine .....
...... and he comes from a family of extraordinarily thick people !

  12. If you get to fly the Russian Ka52 there is no tail rotor

  13. Exactly so !

Just like the Chinook ...... twin main rotors , counter-rotating . so a tail rotor is unnecessary ( and totally pointless )
but an interesting point historically ..... Sikorsky and Kamov blazed a trail in helicopter design that continues to
    this day .
