  1. Interesting how many of the early posters from this thread have disappeared

  2. Given their ages back then they’ve probably all popped their clogs by now :)

  3. I passed 70 this year. It's shit. I feel like I got to 30..... blinked.... and then I was 65. I once asked our GP what's the secret to long life? He paused for a while, then replied "Choose your parents very carefully" :D

  4. yip, i'm considerably older than one of them and about the same age as the other. it better be true when they say two negatives make a positive. i'd hate to think i've waisted all that money buying a Vape.

  5. I am considerably less sprightly than I was before that’s for sure…

  6. I think a new pair of knees would go a long way to making me feel like a, well a 50 year old again.
On the bright side - there is only one alternative to getting older and so I choose getting older.

  7. Seems like I’m in the middle of the bell curve at 54. I don’t know if I feel better or worse about that, what with me being a young whipper snapper…

  8. Lol. I'm no longer surprised how many here are older than me; what surprises me is that are some are younger, though still unequivocally old! Nothing brings it home as conclusively that I am old - other than the aches and pains, of course.

I think it would be more accurate though to describe us as "has-beans". The crucial point.

  9. Definitely not “runner beans” then?

  10. Not if you take enough cocodamol. Very useful stuff!

  12. Just a number, judge yourself by what you can still do, not how long you've been here.

  13. When I hit 40 a friend of mine said “welcome to heart attack alley” well I’m nearly through that now so what lies ahead for the 50s? I really hope it’s not shitting myself in public.

  15. I’m 53 and somehow I’m managing to hang on to my girlish figure and am still playing sport at a reasonably competitive level (1st XI club/league cricket for a team that is ranked, IIRC, 28th out of 260 teams in the 3 counties covered by the league). However, I don’t recover from injury anywhere near as quickly as I used to though and during the season I’m still struggling to get downstairs on a Tuesday after playing on a Saturday.

I do find it quite scary when I recall something that happened 12 years ago and feels fairly recent, but then I consider that in the same amount of time, I’ll be a pensioner :worried:

  16. All sorts of ailments await there are no specific ones, some are life altering and some just an annoyance. It’s a lottery try appreciate the time you have left and the people you are still in contact with.

  17. As far as I can see longevity is mostly genetic. Factor everything else out and you have people who die in their 70s, whose siblings and parents and grandparents and probably cousins etc die in their 70s. And people who die in their 90s, whose siblings, parents and so on.

And one compelling fact is the no.s of leaders of one kind or another who led through extreme trauma, whose lives common sense might suggest would have been shortened by the stress of it, who lived to their late-90s. Political leaders, wartime Generals, survivors of serious injury, torture, concentration camps. One might suppose there really is a breed of Übermensch born to lead another breed of drones (Hi there!), but for the virtual certainty breeding for traits accounts for it, as intuitively exploited by certain bloodlines. If we really want to extend human lifespan, we should breed scientifically, not based on love. Spread the genes for longevity throughout the pool.

Otherwise, just have fun! But if you're on or about retirement age, even just going grey, and still riding Ducatis, you don't really need telling, do you? Either you have long life genes or merely biblical-era ones; otherwise just keep on keeping on! You seem to have a reasonable handle on what's important.

This was a public service announcement brought to you by the Society for Getting High as a Weather Balloon at the Drop of a Gut Hat.

  18. What frightens me is seeing people from my youth (pop stars musicians sports men) dying
And then realising I've only probably got another 10 years
