1200 I Give Up! Hello Ktm My Dear Old Friend.

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by JH_1986, Jun 25, 2016.

  1. JH, I along with many others have been watching this one with interest, really pleased that you have got a good result but really sad to see how hard you have had to work at it the dealer and Ducati have not covered themselves in glory with this one!!. Recently joined the Ducati fold and touch wood mine has been just fine to date, but dealer experience has been pretty bad.

  2. Speed triple?

I'm loving mine. Have to use more of the available power but still plenty. Not great for 2 but better handling than the skyhook MTS, more proven engine, BRITISH!, knee down but is comfortable too.

  3. The new Speedy has some of the best brakes in biking.

  4. I've got an S1000XR sport SE , I've now done 3k miles on it since March. Was loosely thinking of changing back to a multistrada (had one and a couple of 1098s prev) as I think I prefer twins and that raw grunt.

The S1000XR is a seriously quick weapon, and very grunty, I can stick mine in top at 30mph. Bits I don't like are that initially you can find yourself looking for an extra gear, and as a four cylinder it does lack a bit of character (part of the problem I now have that's making me consider a change).

The handling is amazing, by any bike standards it is right up there it will stick with any sportsbike which is pretty amazing really.

The sound is pretty special too and it seems to draw a lot of interest (I find it a bit ugly mind).

The original screen was swapped out to an MRA (am 6'2) and it is fantastic, I remember the early multistrada being awful until I added some screen inserts (Palmer?) to push it out a bit, and then it was only ok.

The vibes thing was worse on early XR models, I tried one on launch and it was horrid, tingling hands time. mine has no steep increase in vibes in the rev range so it is a non issue and no problem. Maybe they did something to tweak it for 2016.

The XR headlight is pretty rubbish. Seat is ok not GS plush tho. Reliability is A1, nothing misting up or dropping off, 100 percent won't let you down (big big plus point versus Ktm/Ducati).

I've had a 2014 GS with the lighter flywheel, i did about 10k miles in 18 months, it's fairly quick and handles well but not the sort of bike to stir the loins and make you want to go for a ride for the sheer hell of it, but as a comfy tourer that can also scratch a bit in the mountains it's a great bike. I had some of my most enjoyable ever rides on a bike on it, on the road out of Moffat and up at Glencoe, not silly silly speeds either, although I saw an indicated 145mph 2 up in France on the back roads.

In an ideal world I would have an XR, a GS and a multistrada.

  5. Got a full set of black luggage going now. Will have to take the locks out as the key will be going back with the bike. Will grab the top box rack mount bit off too whilst I'm there

  6. My ideal bike would be the KTM 1290 engine with the XR's chassis and suspension and the GS's seat, screen and controls..

  7. In a 1098 body shell :)

  8. GS's display is naff. Speedo is really hard to read easily.

  11. Just one more who has been reading this thread after all the updates, feeling good at what seems to be the outcome. Now eagerly waiting to see what you will get. And hoping good luck and trouble free miles with the new one! :)

  12. Sent off an email about a 2013 990 SMT. Will do the whole air box and tune with a view to making the hooligan a bit more of a loon. Will put a deposit down ASAP whilst I await all the paperwork to go through. They have to unwind my agreement before I can go into a new one.

  13. I'd still say smr.... Rarer, sportier, and look way better... That was one of my alternatives to the hyper but the hypers character just won it over...

  14. Having had a 990 SMR, I've now gotten used to the luggage and tank range of the multi. It's the same motor and frame, just can go a bit further and be a bit more comfortable with SWMBO on the back.

  15. Yeah... You did say but I love em.... It was so close when I got the hyper...

  16. I ride the front of bikes very heavy, I found the hyper front felt a bit 'floaty'. Feels like you've got nothing going on in front of you. SMR was so planted.

Finding an SMR though is a task in itself. Rare and snapped up in a flash. I'll catch ebola in my house before I manage to snare an SMR in the timeframe I want back on two wheels.

  17. Yeah... That's why I likem.... Rare and a bit special..!
