Importing Bikes From Europe

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Origin unknown, Aug 4, 2015.

  1. So does that mean you would just take off the italian 22% vat (rate according to Mr Google) and add on the British 20% so effectively end up UK legal for the same overall price? Would you then have to pay import tax or something else like that?

  2. That is roughly how it works yes. You will have to check the UK .gov sites for the full picture.

  3. Seems too simple :) I was only look out of curiosity but it does actually look like it's a worthwhile thing to do if like us you have family out there. Plus we can fill the van with olive oil and wine!

  4. It has been done for years, but has tailed off due to the weakness of sterling. Now that sterling is getting stronger it is worth doing again.
You don't need family anywhere, yo just buy a bike and either claim the Italian VAT back from Italy, or buy the bike tax free for export. Either way you will have to pay UK tax to register it in the UK. In some countries you can even get export plates for a vehicle, French ones are red and white. Germany does them too, they are often known as diplomatic plates.

  5. So,
The question is, if you have to pay uk vat on a less then 6m old, less then 6000k miles bike even though its already been paid in the eu country you buying it from, then is it not possible to apply from a vat refund from the eu country after you have bought the bike from the seller/dealer?

  6. As Bob says above, you dont pay vat in the source country.

  7. Buying a vehicle from an EU country is easy. I've done it.
You don't pay the tax twice. There is no import duty from an EU country. You pay vat. Used vehicles you don't pay vat on as it has been paid in the country of origin.

You'll find the answers are on the HMRC site.

Before doing this it's worth checking out insurance costs as it is an import. That could swallow up the savings over the years.

As for bringing in a track bike for 6k less.....sounds like a good idea!

  8. I did this back in April; buy the bike and ship it here, register with NOVA on HMRC this is to see if VAT is due and if so pay it, there was no VAT to pay on my bike (35 yrs old).

Get the form from DVLA and fill in as many details as you can - many are N/A, no COC needed on bikes over 10yrs old.

You will need a document proving date of first registration if you want an age-related plate, not sure what happens if you can't do this but I believe a 'Q' plate is issued - I had the original Italian V5 (equivalent) which was accepted with no problem but you won't get this back.

Meanwhile to get the registration you need to insure the bike on the frame number and get an MOT, then send away all the documents along with the fee (£55 IIRC) plus road tax fee and within a week I got a UK V5 document and an age related no. plate. Update the insurance co. with the reg no. and you're good to go.

Actually I found it surprisingly simple.

  9. Right peeps,
Bit of a complex one for ya.
Pretty set on buying a damaged 2015 1299S from German seller, but read here that if less 6m AND less then 6000km then pay uk 20% vat on price.
    Now problem for me,
its racebike only, on a new blank frame(Ducati receipt included) AND comes with Brand-new zero miles/km replacement dash, so no proof of mileage.
    So my question is,
Do I have pay uk vat or not ??????

  10. If it is a race bike only and is not going to be road registered then I do not see why you would have to pay VAT. The best people to ask is customs and excise, the DVLA will not be interested as it will not be road registered. I think that you pay the VAT on registration.

  11. Well,
Seller tells me he send parts uk before and will only send as pallet of 1299s parts inc frame/engine in parts, so he say no UK Vat to pay.
    I Bloody hope so.

  12. If he's paid vat in Germany then there's no vat to pay here. That's what EEC is all about. Imports from the States incur Vat.

Check it with HM Customs, they will tell/help. Especially as it's a track bike.

  13. Looking at a 2007 bike in Holland . So as far as age goes I am fine but the mileage is way below 6000 (must have been in a collection) does that mean I will get hit ?
