Importing From Eu To Uk

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Old Jock, May 7, 2014.

  1. split it then ship then reassemble.

  2. Yes indeed. But three other guys have posted in this thread - no doubt humorously - proposing scams involving fitting high-mileage speedos from other bikes onto a low-mileage bike. Most amusing.

  3. Surely the VAT on imported vehicles rule exists only to ensure that VAT is paid either at the time of purchase by the original owner OR at time of import if the vehicle was bought specifically to export - not both?

If the original sale included EU VAT then VAT (in the EU) was paid and should not need to be paid again?

Any VAT due on import is (or should be) for vehicles that were purchased abroad net of VAT (purchased specifically to export) in which case VAT would need to be paid on import.

If indeed it is double-due then HMRC are taking the piss - wouldn't surprise me though...

  5. I agree and the adviser today who gave me wrong advice alluded to that sentiment too (However given that she did give me other duff advice I'm not prepared to take her word on it).

The beginning of the notice states

"It explains how VAT applies to new means of transport.

In the EU most goods are charged with VAT in the country in which they are purchased. However for a new land vehicle, ship or aircraft, VAT will be due in the Member State of destination if:

    • it falls within the definition of 'New Means of Transport' (NMT), and
    • it is sold to a customer who intends to take it to another Member State."
& NMT is less than 6 months old OR less than 6000 kilometers

So if its done less than 6k then every time it moves across local borders within the EU its liable for VAT.

My only thinking on this is that some sort of scam was going on in the past and this was drafted as measure of countering it, in all probability a sledge hammer to crack a nut, but that's the law.

It applies to all EU countries not just UK.
