So what that seems to be saying is, if not sorn’d they expect it to be used so much be insured. So, lapse insurance, sorn vehicle.
Also, looking as that came in years ago, I can see how it was designed to take uninsured cars off the road as you did have a tax disc back then.
you could be right, could be my memory here, it would be good if someone could clarify - as bradders said, some of these 'rules' seem to drift in via the grapevine almost rather than through an organised declaration of a law change.
earlier this week i received a threatening letter re my van insurance... I've not been using it on the Rd ( its parked on the drive) as its not running. It's still taxed till march and I couldn't see the point in sorning it as i intended on fixing it. . but it turns out they can fine me for no insurance even though its taxed and not in use. They would prefer I paid no tax while its not in use... I thought it was only an offence to use an uninsured vehicle on the Rd not keep one on the driveway... so I've sorn it and the dvla will lose £22 a month for being fucktards
It all seems unnecessary, it won't stop the people who deliberately flaunt the rules. If you do the right thing and park your vehicle off road when uninsured or no tax you get fined if you don't let them know. Steve
when the whole "SORNgate" thing erupted I can remember an increasingly heated conversation with a DVLA enforcement agent on the phone who was telling me I had to adhere to the procedure when a car is scrapped, passing on the logbook to the affiliated scrapdealer person for processing along with the vehicle. I told him that I would struggle to do this as the vehicle was now axed into many van-sized pieces in my back garden. Luckily there is no law against this (yet)..
Chizel, you haven’t lost £22 they have saved you whatever is given back as a rebate. I do my tax (not bike, as it’s so cheap) for car, van anything larger that I may have very occasional use as a 12m tax and pay monthly. Then, cancel last day (or maybe couple days before) end of month and sorn when my insurance is due if I know it won’t be used/rendered for a while. Then simply cancel the DD.
Those of us who have some kind of garage or driveway to store vehicles off the highway whenever they are lacking insurance, MOT, and/or tax (and therefore must be SORNed) have it easy. My sympathies lie with those poor buggers who have nowhere off road available, which is most folk in cities. As soon as their insurance expires, or their van fails its MOT, they must fix it immediately or else they are in trouble; but if they declare SORN yet leave the vehicle on the road they are in even more trouble. If the cost of insurance or of repairs to pass an MOT is greater than the money they can afford straight away, they are really stuffed. The petty aggravation of having to go online for two minutes and declare SORN (at a cost of £zero) whilst your vehicle is parked on the drive awaiting repairs seems insignificant in comparison.
