1200 Intermittent Fault - No Response To Throttle

  1. I would get the dealer to take a look and connect it to the DDS

    At least that way your not risking any mis diagnosis on your part and potentially fitting the wrong parts...
     
  2. also, the starter switch can fail and it has the same symptomps as the sidestand, a new one costs about 40 odd quid from ducati and is easi-ish to fit (tank needs to be lifted).
    (have replaced 3 during last 5 years).
     
  3. Good question. I don't know. Whatever it is that come on a 2010 MTS 1200. I've not had a look at it.
     
  4. Yes, just replacing parts based on my best guess could turn out to be expensive and time consuming. I'll book it in and see what they would charge for the part and to do the work then decide from there.
     
  5. Unless they only cost £3 which is the price of a new ETV relay.

    I finally got round to getting the bike serviced and just before it went in (I use a collect and return service) I decided to fire the bike up and go for a spin but when I hit the starter I got an ETV Relay error on the display and it wouldn't start. I switch it off then back on and she started reluctantly but no error. In September, around the time the throttle problem reared it's ugly head, the starting was very occasionally (as in twice) a bit dodgy but I don't recall seeing any errors. I did a bit of googling and found out the ETV Relay is part of the fly-by-wire system and intimately connected with the throttle. I also found out it can cause starting problems. I told Ducati Glasgow about it and they said there was nothing in the bikes diagnostics to say it had reported an ETV error but they had a look and the socket and relay pins were grotty. They cleaned the socket up and replaced the relay at a cost of £3. That must be the cheapest thing on the bike. Well - apart from me.

    I just got the bike back tonight and fired her up in the garage. She started without any hesitation at all and the engine responded as expected when I blipped the throttle. I really need to take her out for a run to see if the "job's a goodun" but I'm guessing that won't be until hurricane arsegale (or whatever) blows through. Anyway - I'll let you know how it goes.

  6. Interesting - I've intermittently got not dissimilar issues to you. So where is the ETV relay? I'll go have a look as I don't really fancy tacking down the road to DG in the face of cyclone codswallop…
     
  7. There's a group of 3 relays just to the rear of the left side fairing thing. Have a look at this link:

    I'm not sure you have to take the fairings off.

    If so, no wonder some people regard them as consumables and replace them on a regular basis...

  11. Ducati Glasgow charged me £3.26p for the relay, which must make it the cheapest component on the bike. It might even be worth getting them replaced at every major service.

  13. I carry a spare relay under the seat, just in case. I bought it as a spare for the fuel pump relay for when I was on foreign trips. It will of course also do for the ETV. I'd better look into the access to them and see if it can be done without lifting the tank. Maybe mounting them upside down in the rubber mounting sleeves will make it easier.

    I had exactly the same problem as you describe. Mine was a 2010 MTS S. The problem was more common on cracking open the throttle, such as blipping it on down changes or just when idle to enjoy the noise (full system Termis, of course!), but also sometimes at low throttle openings in traffic, which as you say was most worrying! It started happening at about 20000 miles or so.
    My dealers said they had never come across the problem, and their computer found no faults.
    I have to say I have not managed to get a proper cure, but I am pretty sure I have worked out what the problem is due to. The fact that the twist grip feels fine, the cables are functioning etc, but sometimes there is zero response for the actual throttle injectors (both of them, never just one), leads me to conclude that the throttle position sensor (TPS) is faulty. As far as I know, this is simply a potentiometer activated by the throttle cables from the twist grip, located on the throttle bodies themselves. On occasion movement in the cable cam does not result in electrical change and so no throttle input is registered. Result? Open the throttle and it just continues at idle speed.
    There is now good news and bad news.
    The good news is that you can reduce / eliminate the problem by winding the twist grip on and off 10-12 times before you start the engine. It's as if this cleans the potentiometer of any grease or muck that is causing the problem. It's not a permanent or foolproof fix though.
    Which brings us to the bad news: in order to a) test my theory properly and b) to fix the problem permanently, you would need to replace the TPS. And to do that you need to get a whole new throttle body assembly - Ducati don't supply just the potentiometer as a separate item. And I was quoted about £1500 for that.
    Anyone know of used parts available from breakers?
    Final advice - if and when it happens that you twist the throttle to no effect, make sure you instantly cover the clutch with the other hand!

    PS I finally sold my bike, shortly to be replaced by a new one of the same.

  15. You've been on exactly the same journey as I have, with the same conclusions. It does turn out though that the TPS is a standard £30 Fiat part (I'd need to refind the link that gave the part no) - it just needs careful diassembly of the throttle body to replace it. Once we're a metre deep in snow, I might have a go…

    I've not found any definitive equivalent of the TPS element of the Multi throttle body (282.4.087.1A). I'm sure there will be one, as these are completely standard industry components.
     
  20. Thanks anyway. I'm investigating poor running on a neutral throttle, which wasn't there when I fitted a full Termi system, but has gradually crept in. I'll try the ETV relay, the side stand switch, ensure the air cleaner is firmly seated, before plugs and coils, then TPS as a last resort.
