996 Invaluable Info/facts Thread For 996r

I finally got around to looking into the Cylinder head part numbers.

30121001A 2000 996 RS and 2001 RS
30121011A 2001 996 RS
30121031A 2001 996 R

30121091A 2001 996 R II (original part number)
30121092A 2002 998 all models excluding R (original part number)
30121093A This part number superseded the previous 2 and is now listed as the replacement part for the 996R, All 998 models (Excluding the R)
And the below models.



So the original 996R part had more in common with the RS part number.

The 996R II was the first revision of the 998 production part which then became the 999 part. Development in this area of the engine slowed considerably when compared to the previous years.

That’s as far as I can go - without owners checking the part number of the heads on their bikes and reporting back to see if early engine production numbers differed from later ones.

 

Not quite the topic, but I understand there never was a single seat 998 Matrix. Biposto only. Not that it would have any incidence on the heads, mind you, but this parts list is weird…

 

Yeah, custom painted mono seat on the original Biposto rear frame…
Also, the seat pad is not correct for a 2004 998. Should have Ducati written on the fabric. No Ohlins front forks or carbon front mud guard on Matrix either.

Still a beautiful mono interpretation of the Matrix.

 

After the bostrom , the matrix is the worst they made imho.

Sorry - I wasn’t trying to be facetious - I was just rushing out the door and didn’t have time to write a comment!

It is odd that there’s a separate parts list for a Monoposto - especially as the parts lists are identical as far as I can see.

But I scanned through the list for the tail unit and was surprised to find a mono fairing and then took a closer look at the diagram.

Part number 1 on the diagram is the Biposto fairing - but part 39 is the Monoposto fairing. I think that the Mono fairing might have been an optional extra.

There isn’t a separate part number for a mono subframe which would explain the use of the Biposto item.

There’s a couple of forum members that posted pictures of 998 Matrix with Mono tail fairings. One of them states that it was rare but genuine.

Another member said “I checked Ian Falloon's Ducati catalogue covering bikes up to 2005 and no numbers are listed but it states for 2004 the 998 Matrix was produced "on request" whatever that means, so it may not be all that of a limited edition as has been mentioned above.”

So it may have been possible to add a mono tail fairing at the time of ordering.

The bikes are both advertised as coming with both tail fairing options.

To try and confirm how genuine it is (vs custom painted), it would be interesting to see if on a green « Matrix » mono tail, we find the same markings as on the other Matrix (bip) and SFE 2004 tails. Until then, I remain a bit skeptical, to be totally honest. I’ll dig in my papers to see what I can find. Any interesting findings I’ll post on my Matrix thread to avoid further high jack on this one.

 

when I bought my Mj00 996 it was available as Bip or mono, as it arrived with the plain red monoposto seat from the factory and the same pricing if i remember correctly

 

The way the parts list for the seat unit is presented for the 2000 996 is identical to the Matrix - The Biposto tail fairing is Number 1 (but in this case there are 2 part numbers 1 Red, 1 Yellow.
Then again further down there’s part 39 - Monoposto tail fairing - unpainted - same part number as the one listed on the Matrix and lot’s of other models of that era. So it looks like if you ordered that option from the factory a Mono fairing was painted to match.

@92GTA - I have just noticed the part numbers are weird in the 2001 catalogue - the 2002 catalogue has proper part numbers in for the same stands.

 

I've always understood that the silver/grey stand to be a "transport stand" used inside the crate when the bikes were shipped. The dealers often supplied these stands with the bike rather than put them in the scrap bin.

My bike, a 998r came with a "transport stand" and when I acquired and it also had a paddock (track) stand, made by FG, that was more an orangey/red colour.

Certainly the 996r and perhaps the 998r as well received one, as you well know the 916sp / sps had the gold coloured trackstand.
