Thanks Steve, is it worth me bothering with the flowchart analysis then in your opinion? Which model of the Shindengen rectifier do you have?
If you are getting up to 18v with a few revs then your reg/rec is defiantly knackered. If you want to upgrade with a better unit i would recommend this unit (SHINDENGEN MOSFET FH020AA REGULATOR/RECTIFIER KIT REPLACES FH012AA | eBay ) you may be able to source it locally or second hand but I purchased this one from America. It can be used for a single or three phase generator. Steve PS when it arrived I had to pay import duty to the post office. If you don't need the wire and fuse, this one from the same seller is a little cheaper.YAMAHA SHINDENGEN FH020AA REGULATOR W/CONNECTORS /REPLACES FH012AA | eBay
As an additional question, is it possible to fill an empty battery with only distilled water and expect to be able to charge it back to full operational status?
If I added a fresh acid pack to my empty battery and charged fully, would that work? Or am I better off buying a new battery? (and new RR of course)
Well thanks to your kind input chaps I have resolved the problem. I've managed to revive my dry battery simply by topping up all the cells with distilled water and putting it on charge (CTEK 800 charger) overnight. I wasn't convinced but Green light this morning so that was encouraging. My spare old battery which I tried yesterday after a long charge didn't work, but that was charged using a different charger (crappy auto-xs jobby) so maybe the charger was at fault. As luck would have it, there was an RR51 installed on the spare bike so I've just swapped that over, amazingly easy to do. Fired up no problems and the voltage is now reading 14v at steady tickover rising to 14.5/15v when revved. Arquebus I have to agree with you about putting a new battery in and I probably will do so, just had to try all options - just wanting to get back on the road while the summer continues. Thanks again to all for your help and advice, you guys are a credit to this forum.
14 Volts is good, 15volts is a bit high......but if you run with your headlight on, it should be OK........I do the same for the same reason.
