This should probably be a new thread by now. I've hoiked off the RHS fairing to reveal all the beauty underneath.. Now the pear shaped boss, I can remove the 5mm allen bolt ok. I carefully cleaned the small stones and crud away while the allen bolt was in place so as not to allow any debris to fall inside. However, that large bolt head above just rotates (quite freely) and doesn't seem to actually unscrew as such - should it? I'm not sure how to remove the boss assembly, is there a special trick to this? The front head seems to be well oiled, I'm assuming this is from a poor seal on that large nut.
That hex bolt shouldn't be in there at all.....I suspect it has been stuck in with some gasket mastic.....just pull it out.....there is an oil seal in the top of the boss which may be holding the bolt rather than mastic. The allen bolt should be removed..... The threaded part of the boss is where the tacho drive cable screws on....... You have two ways to get the boss out (or both)...........either wrap something around the fine threaded part to protect it when you close a mole grip onto it and then try rotating the boss at the same time as pulling upwards...... .......or, get a thin bladed knife or a steel rule with a sharp edge and ease it into the join between the pear shaped flange and the head, then lever it up a bit.....it should move up enough so you can increase the thickness of what you shove into the gap.....it should come out eventually (there is an O ring around the boss which makes it quite tight). Here's mine with the damaged pinion in place.....
Thanks, I know you've got problems of your own today. Yes that bolt just pulled out in the end. I'll keep working on it.
Looks like the oil seal has pulled out under the hex bolt head.............Interesting to note the rust on the bolt thread......let's hope it didn't get too far and onto the cam........ Don't forget if you bugger your boss (if you and he are that way inclined) I have a spare.....
Ha ha Yes I was worried about that rust too. I'll try again tomorrow with the boss removal. Outta time today.
Boss extracted, had to attach the tacho cable to get the unit out. Managed to get a small mirror to see inside, took the plugs out put the bike in gear and rotated the rear wheel and had a good look (as best I could) at the worm and it *seems* to be in good order, can't see any damage. So I might just be lucky enough to get a new pinion drive to resolve the problem.
Can you definitely see the edge of the worm teeth all the way round? If so it might be worth trying a new pinion (or a good secondhand one) but if you fit one, don't connect the tacho cable, start the engine (switch off if makes a screeching noise) and watch the pinion spinning....blip the throttle and see if the pinion stutters while rotating. I tested mine wearing a tight fitting of gardening glove (the ones with thick leather on the finger tips) and pinched the pinion to see if it stopped....be careful doing that! And while you have the fairing off, remove the front belt cover and check the tightness of the pulley silly nut......
Yep teeth look fine all the way round. I will try and get a replacement pinion and try as you say. Pulley nut is tight, perhaps it wasn't so during the previous ownership..
I did have a spare pinion but someone else collared that...........(Should have kept it really)...... You may not be able to get one from Ducati without having the worm as well (they come as a kit) but speak to Craig at MotoRapido......he tells it as it is......Baines racing may have one, but as Chris says, be careful with the ratio....
I found summat out today.......I paid £43 for the tacho drive gear kit approx 5 years ago from MotoRapido...... ......Craig told me today that the same kit now costs £164 approx......... .............I suppose that's what happened when Audi took over......
Jeez! I counted 13 teeth on my pinion drive. I'm hoping the drive on spare engine will be conpatible ('92 compared with my '95).
