Is It Time For Mm93 To Retire?

Discussion in 'Racing & Bike Sport' started by El Toro, Mar 22, 2022.

  1. Question, suggestion or just shouting random shit into the forum in the absence of a rational or intelligent response?

  3. I think we all know tha answer to that one.

  4. I said many many posts ago he wouldn't win another championship, I stand by that comment. He isn't the rider of old and IMO never will be, the passage of time and an underlying arm injury, let alone the risk to his eyesight with every knock to the head.

If you've ever knackered a shoulder you know it's never 100% again, clearly he's not happy with rumbling around somewhere in the top 10, certain tracks plays to his strengths and certain tracks highlight just how bad his arm/shoulder is - Mugello being one with the fast direction changes.

I hope for his sake the surgery is worth it, it could go either way, if he just gets a decent shoulder that he can live a normal life with I think he should be happy, thinking that surgeons have a miracle fix after the trauma of the accident then 2 further surgeries, infection, scar tissue there's a lot of damage in there it's going to be impossible for me to imagine it getting back to being anywhere like fixed.

Ultimately his fearless attitude which has given us years of entertainment with all of those risks and amazing saves has cost him the chance of 3 world titles, and I'd say at least 4 given the recovery time from the surgery plus the time taken to get himself back into a fit physical/strong state, as per my opening comment he won't win another championship.

He's a genius on a bike, no-one else can do what he does, possibly Stoner being the modern exception, Rossi didn't have that level of talent, but he was a great racer and tactician and he won a hell of a lot and walked away pretty much in one piece.

  5. I think thats reasonable enough.

Edit: Plus we have Fabio. He is deffo an alien. No way he gets that Yam to 2nd at Mugello. But he did. Fabio does it so effortlessly and without fuss and drama, its almost easy to miss that the guy is super talented. Bung 10kph on that bike and no-one would get near him.

  6. Good points & whilst not diminishing VR, I agree there too. I think the issue is that Marquez is a racer at heart, that’s what he does & i’m not sure he knows that if he retires at this age, where his life will go. So many elite sportsman in all sports has retired and regretted it. If he can get his arm working and he’s becomes capable of winning another world championship, that will be all the motivation he needs.

  7. Trouble for MM is its not just his arm that is the issue. Its his eyes. One more bump to the head could be it. MM is no stranger to bumps on the head and bike racing carries that as a high probability risk. I have no doubt he would be super successful at any form of racing, he should go somewhere where he can get that fix with a lower risk to his eyes. None of us want to see him forced to retire permanantly due to diplopia.
His racing style is high risk high reward. He could only do that indefinately. It finally caught up with him. He got away with it for so long, we all said he was one crash away from disaster. Well, that disaster arrived. He pulled it off for seasons. He should count his blessings and his trophies and find another less dangerous activity. Like base jumping.

  8. Hard to argue with that

  9. I see he’s having his arm re broken to fix it. Brutal. I like how he’s still had a dig at the other Honda riders saying the bike is a podium bike when he’s fit…. We will see, I suspect Honda will go back closer towards his style of bike (very nosey) for his return

  10. I very much doubt they will be putting all their eggs in that basket again, truth is Honda have made rider selection errors. none of the riders that came in after Dani have been good enough, not even as number twos, Honda will learn from this and won't build a strategy around a glass rider.

  11. MM wasnt a glass rider though. He was, until he wasnt, almost indesctuctable. That 'off' at, where was it Japan at 200mph. Fuckin hell, I'dve retired on the spot and never ridden a bike ever again.

  12. He is now, its a huge shame as as much as I dislike MM the person, MM the talent is sublime.

  13. I agree…. The normal process in their career seems to be that they crash loads early on, then stop crashing and win, then they start crashing and start getting hurt, then they carry injuries and it gets worse and then they get slow with it. Marquez has always been a crasher but was just so fast with it.

take tartan Mackenzie as another example, he has had some absolutely massive crashes which I would argue rival anything in MotoGP when you consider proximity of fences etc and he walked away from them all until this year and 2 serious injuries right next to each other on consecutive crashes

  14. Ha ha, knew you’d snaffle the bait

  15. Hang on! You dislike MM the person? How well do you know him? Not winding you this time, serious question….

  16. I’m sure he reflects on the original crash quite a lot , and even more so the “heroic “ or in layman’s terms , the just plain daft return to try and race a week or so after the arm break .

At that point in his career he was without doubt the top dog that all the riders feared and pretty much bowed down to. MM seemed to believe that he was invincible and could be fixed like one of his totalled bikes. And even through all the pain and deep dark days of rehabilitation still seems to be clutching to the hope of a miracle cure. It seems a long shot to make it work but looks like the only option other than retirement.

  17. Ah, the retort of one with no real retort, good work.

  18. Well enough to know that I dislike him, he just isn't my cup of tea, not everyone can be, people can be polarising and you only need a glimpse into someones psyche to know they aren't your kind of person ....

There are plenty of riders I think as a person present better attributes than he does.

Opinions are bit like arseholes, everyone has one, as do most forums ...

  19. I dislike him (MM) as a MotoGP rider only as he is the bogeyman. Like Schumacher was, like Maz Biaggi, Doohan etc. Its not a real dislike, its a pretend dislike to make the sporting more fun. In real life, he may well be a personable fellow and I'd get on fine with him.

  20. Yep. And I reckon you’ll know :)
