Is the 1199 too much?

  1. Oh I don't know, I'm pretty sure he's at least guessed one new members name was dave from the outset

  2. Hey, Glidd called it, not me...

  3. Good plan! The 899 will have more than enough power!!

To put it in perspective; I have just got my 848 evo and came from a Daytona 675. The Daytona had loads of 'grunt' relative to the rest of the 600 class but the 848 is about 15hp up on it and the difference is quite big! For me it's meant being able to ride a long at a decent pace and just crack a bit of throttle and feel a really nice burst of power where as on the smaller capacity bike u can't.

I should point out that I love my 125/250 2-strokes so I'm not saying bigger is better, just that i think the supermid (sorry everyone!) is spot on as is the GSXR750 in the 4cylinder world.

  4. By all accounts Glidd' the Superleggera is already there: 210+ and 155kgs dry....and an eye-watering $AUD 90k!

  5. £55k for the superleggera is about 40k too much for a bike rolled in glitter. I can understand a Desmo being £40k+ but the 1199 has done nowt to deserve its spangles. The 899 is pound for pound the better bike by a considerable margin. The 1199SL is just a status bike. The 899 is a 'real world' bike (for Glid) and will do everything you ask of it. Plus it looks a lot nicer than the 1199 with its double swingarm.

Now if the 1199 was drop dead gorgeous in a Tamburini sort of way then maybe. But it isnt. IMO. But again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I'm not a racer or a track god, so looks have a great deal of influence on my choices. So what if that is shallow but its true. I dont care about 195bhp. I cant use anything above say 140bhp anyway as i'm just a normal bloke. I'd save the money and spangle my 899 with it.

  6. Words of wisdom. But then I'm biased as I just bought a 899 Panigale.

  7. So your not wondering about the 1199R or Superleggera then?

  8. it's all about the Real World, what do you want in the Real World... away from the race track, on Real Roads, Real Riders.

Just getting it out my system! I am desperate to get out on my bike, it's making me angry!

  9. Me too. I havent ridden either of them since early November...

  11. I was waiting for someone to ask this. I've never been tempted by the 1199R, it's too similar to the 'S' for my liking and riding expertise (or lack of it!) to justify the extra 7K. The Superleggera is for people with more money than sense. Some will just become garage ornaments parked next to the Lambo or Ferrari and be owned by someone who doesn't even have a bike licence. Other's will be bought by celebrity numb heads or footballers who'll ride it into a tree on it's first outing. Few will be seen on the road ridden by down to earth people. I don't have the cash so don't have to worry about one.

  12. I know the feeling. I just sat on my bike the other day, it was up on the paddock stands but I just climbed on and sat there in anticipation of an early spring with sun and warm tarmac!!

  13. i am off to vegas shortly . wish me luck... whenback if any is still unsold i will be ordering one

  14. Yep. Ive done my time commuting in all weathers. Now I work within walking distance of my home so I do not need to. Thus I wont 'knacker' my bikes by riding them in salty roads. I admit to being a pansy. But if i did have to ride it wouldnt be on a duke. It would be an enduro bike with cheap as chips running costs that if it fell over wouldnt cost me £££££ to repair. However i dont recommend commuting from Croydon to Euston on a KTM300EXC. It was great fun and no superbike could keep up but it very nearly killed me. This bike broke both my wrists twice. Man it was fun though. On/Off throttle powerband meant full chat everywhere. I had to sell it for a dour DRZ400 before i died.

  15. The simple answer to all this is, always buy the best you can afford.
That way you never look back thinking I should have bought that.
There is too much put on how fast you can ride or not as to whether a person should buy what bike, who gives a sh-t.
Life is about enjoying yourself, as I am pretty sure you only get one crack at it.

  16. Without knowing your true capabilities, you should get assessed by a qualified instructor and go from there.

All bikes are a handful and some more than others. You need to know your limits. No bike is forgiving.

If you are having doubts, as said, thats confidence or nerves or both right there. They wouldnt be condusive to stress free riding imo.

  17. Seriously its pretty simple. Any bike can be ridden slowly or as fast as it will go. Nearly everything on the road will crack 120 these days. Thats enough...but some bikes dont make sense until silly speeds. My 848 was easy to ride at anything above 50. My blade needed twice that before it made sense.

an 899 will scare you as much as an 1199.

  18. Or get one of the Foffa bikes which always comes up as the banner ad on this thread...

  19. That's exactly right Bradders but what's the point in the 1199 if u can scare the shit out of yourself on an 899 for £2500 less; plus cheaper insurance (I guess)....

  20. Willy waving aside. I bought an 848 originally because I couldn't afford the purchase price and insurance of a 1098. I then refused to try a 1198 as I knew I'd love its lazy nature and would want one. Then bought an Evo becasue I intended to rae. It as well as roas bike, or would have bought a 1198 or ZX10r for same money. Could afford the insurance.

but...848 was just fun most of the time. Effort was needed to ride it. And it worked perfectly, everywhere. Whereas bigger bikes i've had are higher gear, roll on, less stress and less fun. Its not doing 170 on the 272 thats fun, its how it gets there
