The protection and monitoring isn't going very well. We're devouring the Earth through rapacity and sheer numbers like a maladaptive parasite that destroys its host and dooms itself. As far as other life forms are concerned nuclear weapons are the least of their worries. I've always thought that if intelligent life is widespread in the universe and the Earth is being monitiored, it is likely that the planet is in quarantine, a toxic world to be contained in isolation under a communications blackout until the lethal pathogen of humankind has either evolved into another form or died out.
