let the lad chose what he wants and work round it, all the nippers love KTMs , not the most practical but do you really care what the olds think when your a kid? you know much better when you are a kid!

don't think you can go far wrong with a DRZ - although appealing, some of those KTM's can be high maintenance in comparison. this probably won't appeal but :- http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/2000-suzuki-drz400-e/1007849114#gallery-item-full-3 looks like a good honest bike - it's the most desirable for that era and if mileage is to be believed then price not too bad plus might take an offer as most people will be put off from the pictures.. (would have to lose the knobblies).

Fly up and ride it back! That's what I did with my SS. It was a tiring weekend, but a fantastic experience. You could either fly to inverness or aberdeen, and get a train from there. It's a bit of a strange experience as you need to travel very light, and its a long way from anywhere, but you can use that in your favour to negotiate hard on the price. Just bear in mind you need the price nailed down before you arrive, because standing on the vendors door step 500 miles from home in your leathers he will know you aren't about to leave empty handed. Make sure those leathers are comfortable too, as you will be in them pretty much full time from leaving home, as hand luggage pretty much covers just your lid, and what you can cram inside it. This will be limited to a thin pair of jogging bottoms (for the hotel bar at your over night stop) and a change of underwear at most, so you will be on the plane, and any subsequent trains in your leathers. This is not the time to find they are too small, or for that matter too big - there is nothing more uncomfortable than a pair of armoured leather jeans that fall down as you walk.
