Mary, you don't seem surprised by what you have found. I cannot believe that such damage was not extremely evident whilst you were driving it. I think it is called mechanical sympathy, those horrid mechanical noises you mention are the engine either saying "knock it off" or simply preparing itself for a £3,500 death. Anyway respect, I once did worse to an Alfa 156:Muted:
Looks like it could be the sprag clutch lobe retaining spring and some of the magnet from the flywheel amongst general casing parts. If a piston detonated that bad I would have expected a lot more than a few nasty noises and a very quickly non running bike. If it is a piston, how it ran at all is a miracle.
Spareparts has some s/h engine spares for sale. Def looks like an expander spring from the oil control ring.
As mentioned, there was no drop off in performance at all.... The reason I had a mooch around down there is because I missed a couple of gears during a trackday. I'm glad I did judging on what I found... Yikes!!
All that shrapnel would have been like barbed wire lacerating the inside Can highly recommend speaking with MotoRapido, if you haven't already. They did a really super rebuild of my R, and I thought the guidance and advice provided along the way was superb.
If Peterborough is closer than Bristol (LM) give BSD a call & discuss... Those guys do a lot of magic with Ducati engines.. Built Railtons engine in the 848 challenge & have a lot of race heritage.... Remapped my 848 / changed my belts a few weeks back.. Cheaper than LM & they REALLY know their stuff..
I changed the oil on my 1198 the other week and checked the gause filter and it was spotless but seeing your photo has made me shit my pants :Nailbiting: Good luck with the strip down and rebuild mate
Yup, dropped off at Moto Rapido today. Very impressed with the place and those boys know their shit. It struck me a s a technical/workshop biased place as opposed to a showroom which was great.
