You need to open up the transponder key housing first, just as you would do to replace the battery. It splits in half easily but you have to be careful. Then you drill the little holes in the two halves, well away from the electronic gubbins. Snap the two halves back together, and put a key ring through the hole. Ducati should have done this in the first place, obviously.
If you don't fancy drilling the key there is always one of these. Not cheap for what it is but then neither is a new key cheap. Red 100% CNC Billet Key Cover Protector Ducati Multistrada 1200 S 10 11 12 13 | eBay
Pete is absolutely right, this is really easy to do, even if you are not that practical! Take it easy, split it as Pete says, take out the electronic stuff (which I think can be detached) and actually you don't even need to drill. Simply use a small section round file and gently file out a section of plastic in each half, check it a couple of times to suit the diameter of the key insert and there you go. The maximum diameter is likely to be between 3-5 mm at most. Re-insert the electronic gubbins, snap the two halves together, job done...... Total task time, circa 10 min  Good luck, take your time it's not difficult.
Cheers for the run down, going to do it,today nearly set off with key in the seat locker.....rookie error
As an aside, does anyone do replacement filler cap assemblies that don't require a key? I can't say I'm especially concerned about the likelihood of someone pinching my petrol, and it would make filling up much more convenient.
Slingshot racing make them apparently, as I have 1 that came with some parts I bought as a package off eBay.seat, leavers, guards, etc If anyone is interested?. Multistrada 3013.
