Known 848 Issues

  2. The grip levels are awful on the standard pegs. I expect it's better or worse for some depending what boots you have/how you position your feet. But I've not had an issue with my foot slipping off since fitting rizoma pegs in either pair of boots.
    Probably won't kill you but it's very unsettling when your foot slides off the peg mid corner.

I've had no problem with the pegs but I guess the problem with asking a forum what the main problems are is that you (of course) get a long list that may skew an opinion about the general quality level. I've had two 848s and the rad went on the 2010 model and I replaced the battery on both as its asked to do a lot...but that's it really.
    From this forum my understanding is that if you;
    Confirm the rad
    Revalve the rear shock
    Add mosfet reg
    Add better starter cables
    Fit higher cranking battery
    ....you'll enjoy many trouble free miles.
    If you stick a 70mm termi system on it and paint the lower belly fairing red it'll put a smile on your face and a twitch in your pants every time you look at it and / or wind the throttle open.

  4. If we are diverging to what it needs to make it better....
    -Rearsets
    -Quick action throttle
    -Race seat
    -Termis
    Find one with the above already on it and it is almost perfect.
     
  5. Not sure that I would agree with that list. The standard seat is fine and I can't see what a race seat would do. The footpegs are just right. As for the rest that is a matter of personal choice.
     
  6. Not diverging - the question was what are the known issues. I was only trying to list the common problems that people report on here. I think there was a thread a couple of weeks ago about the top five improvements that goes through them in great detail.
    However, once you've got one of these in the garage, its difficult to know when to stop. After I put the termis on and painted the belly pan I found myself sneaking into the garage of an evening with a beer just to have a look at it, the bike that is.....quite obsessive really.
    That's probably one of the issues to be aware about - you need a garage with a beer fridge.

  7. radiator, some have relay issues

    can't think of anything else much. They don't seem to suffer the gearbox problems of the larger models
     
  8. You don't have to agree, we all have different tastes/needs. The race seat stops you sliding around if you wear leathers, and a few other people have mentioned the pegs.

    Woah.... I wasn't having a go. Just introducing that I was going to add my preferred additions, rather than problems, because a few others had. Calm ;)
     
  9. As has been said, I had the radiator go on mine. They crack at the mount point, top left. You get a fine mist of pink down the LH side which gives it away when riding.

    I also had a dodgy tank breather which meant fuel leaked out the filler cap and stained my tank. Not a problem I bet anyone else has had though so hardly a known issue.

  10. Worth noting a rad guard can be at blame for the rad problem, especially if riding on track
     
  11. I thought it was a known issue with a weak mount. The mount is integral to the radiator so the vibes/stress make the mount crack the rad. Sorted on later models. Mine was a 58 plate and I know up to and including 10 plates had the issue.

  12. It is, but made worse when you add a thick enough guard that, under heavy braking and flex, the wheel touches the guard and strains the joint. Add a lowered front and bingo
     
  13. I've had mine for a year and covered around 2.5k miles. I only ride on the road, mainly in Snowdonia and have done one trip to Germany with a couple of guys from the forum. The only issue I have had is with a slight oil leak on the front cylinder rocker cover that leaked into the front plug tube causing it to misfire. A seal on the rocker cover and a new set of plugs and it was fixed. I used a local Ducati independent specialist so the bill was pretty low and not any more expensive than any other bike I've owned. I don't find the rear shock too hard and have replaced mine with a lower mileage original spec unit as mine was looking really ropey due to the previous owner not fitting a hugger. One thing to look for is which map the ECU is running, which you can see when you turn on the ignition and by reading the message that scrolls across the dash. Mine came with Termi end cans fitted but was running the original map meant for standard cans. This is an easy and cheap fix as their are some very helpful guys on this forum that will either guide you through the process yourself or flash your ECU for a small charge. You can buy an OBD reader and get an app for your phone/ tablet to reset service indicator, throttle position sensor and other stuff so it's worth investing a few quid for a cable. Other than that, I've spent money on cosmetic changes and that's it. Get one, you won't regret it!
