1199 Legal Or Dangerous-conclusion

  1. i ‘m the same, constant buzzing and then it will switch to high pitched whines. My hearing has bern destroyed by 22 years of firing mortars and anti tank weapons predominantly without any hearing protection. I have just started to wear hearing aids and its made a massive difference, still got the tinitus but its greatly reduced. Theres a setting I can use which plays a ‘white noise’ type sound into my ears when surrounding noise levels are low although I’ve never needed it up until this time. I must say I really did not realise how miserable it was making me, after a just a week I’m a different man according to the family.

  2. That might explain a lot for me mate.

it’s the disturbed sleep and constant tiredness that’s making me a miserable bastard.

I had my hearing tested and said it was fine and I needed to go to Doctor for tinnitus I thin’ I’ll look into something like your aids, with some kind of noise cancelling.

I’m ok when there’s other noise but the silence is deafening.

  3. I saw an audiologist privately, hearing test showed a prominent loss in a certain range in both ears, tried out a set of aids for a week with immediate improvement 7 nights unbroken sleep as opposed to sitting up until 02, 03.00 most bloody nights. Went back to the audiologist today to try a different set of aids which are better at reducing wind noise for my cycling. He logged on to the set of aids I tried last week and basically they were data logging my entire hearing history while I wore them. I was amazed at how much adjustment he can put into them.

  6. On a serious note.ive been a builder for along time, used all types of noisy tools, always said o bollocks by the time i put them I’ll have it done(what a mug if only i knew).apart from that im paying the price now at 58. In some cases i get so angry at some noises its like aswitch-skill saws, impact drivers, kango. Is this me or is this common with the hearing problem

  7. I’m pretty much the same. When the kids play TikTok videos on their phones I could scream after about a nanosecond! Too many people speaking at the same time, I find difficult to tune out and in social situations that can be a problem (bars, pubs, restaurants). Excessive noise drives me nuts.

Someones using a power tool a few doors down and it’s doing my head in!

Reading what I have on here, especially others experience has led me to think I need to see an audiologist pronto.

  9. Exactly the same for me, busy noisy situations were an absolute no no for many years. I went to a barn dance (not my idea of a Saturday night out) but my hearing aids have totally transformed my experience in crowds and music. Dont get me wrong though its not got rid of my tinitus but in the last few weeks I’ve slept through every night and those periods of high pitched squealing have stopped so far.

  11. I sleep with ear plugs in, so I'm pretty used to them. Mainly to prevent our old cats (long deceased RIP Mrs Dips and Hamish) from waking me at 5am to feed them. Our current two, Bez and Elsie, and especially the latter try it on but I cant hear them.

Ive always worn them on 2 wheels once I moved from scoots to bikes many many moons ago. I can still hear the engine and the zorst, but that shhwwwshhwww high pitched wind noise that is so damaging is hugely reduced. I cant ride without them now.

  12. No-one realises how much hearing loss or damage they have suffered until they visit an audiologist. It is so gradual, on a daily basis, it is imperceptible however over a period of 10, 20 or 30 years it’s enormous.

We all get deafer as we get older, it’s just the natural decay of the body’s functions but a lot of things we took for granted 40 years ago eg live concerts, loud working environments, wind noise on bikes, and since 20 years ago personal stereos/headphones, are now known to accelerate the loss of hearing.

If anyone is questioning their hearing it’s well worth having it checked, just as one would visit an optician as eyesight changes over the years.

  15. 22 years ago I realised that my hearing wasn't as good as it used to be. It was getting hard to hear what my mates were saying in the noise of the pub. Too many years riding without earplugs coupled with several years working with bands as a roadie. From then on I've worn earplugs all the time while on a bike and I'm happy to say that my hearing doesn't seem to have gotten any worse.

  16. Absolutely 100%.
Anyone foolish enough to think wind-roar induced tinnitus is trivial might want to change places with me - thought not!
This is a one-way trip to loud tellys and a life of regret. Put quality ear plugs in and stop being so bloody stupid.

  17. I’ve always worn earplugs in the past but have found the general design by helmet manufacturers to take into account aerodynamics and recently since installing a Cardo intercom system, the void in the helmet once left for your ears and now filled with speakers has results in far less wind noise and if I’m listening to music it’s usually around half volume and certainly we’ll within the limits that my phone warns me of potential heating damage.

It might also be because I rarely reach legal speed limits on the Scrambler :joy:

  18. You’re not trying hard enough :)
