There's a very broad grey area between what is legal and what isn't. Daytime MOTs are still issued in small numbers but having one doesn't mean the bike meets use and construction regs. There are specific build dates where bikes are required lights front and back and indicators etc. the documents are listed on line on the .gov websites. Not the easiest things to make sense of but they're there. With the bike being under three years old, you'll need to comply with the latest issues I'd guess. As mentioned already, you may get away with it if questioned by a beat bobby. A clued up traffic may pull you up and I'm pretty sure the insurance assessor would have a field day if the worse should happen. I'd get some informed advice first. It's much more complicated nowadays than just pulling the lights off the LC's and taping up the switches in the good old days
When I did a bit of green-laning I had a DRZ400E. It only had a headlight from which I removed the bulb & put silver tape over the lens. No indicators, brake light or number plate light as it was for daylight use only. The TRF site is useful for this sort of thing. My understanding is that if any lighting of any description is fitted it must all work. 'All or nothing' seems to be the rule. The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/made Exemptions—General 4. (1) Where a provision is applied by these Regulations to a motor vehicle first used on or after a specified date it does not apply to any vehicle manufactured at least six months before that date. (2) Where an exemption from, or a relaxation of, a provision is applied by these Regulations to a motor vehicle first used before a specified date it shall also apply to a motor vehicle first used on or after that date if it was manufactured at least six months before that date. (3) Nothing in these Regulations shall require any lamp or reflector to be fitted between sunrise and sunset to– (a)a vehicle not fitted with any front or rear position lamp, (b)an incomplete vehicle proceeding to a works for completion, (c)a pedal cycle, (d)a pedestrian-controlled vehicle, (e)a horse-drawn vehicle, (f)a vehicle drawn or propelled by hand, or (g)a combat vehicle. (4) Without prejudice to regulation 16, for the purposes of these Regulations a lamp shall not be treated as being a lamp if it is– (a)so painted over or masked that it is not capable of being immediately used or readily put to use; or (b)an electric lamp which is not provided with any system of wiring by means of which that lamp is, or can readily be, connected with a source of electricity. So exemptions 3a & 4a would seem to cover it. 'Daylight hours' are 30 mins before sunrise & 30 mins after.
+2 on what Arquebus said. But, and there always is a "but" lol. Items tested and passed during an MOT, don't always tie in with Road Traffic law and construction and use regulations. That's why it is impossible to glean a definitive answer on the subject. The chances are, if pulled by plod, if they can't do you under MOT regs, they most certainly can under road traffic law or construction and use regulations.
The insurance aspect would concern me more than being stopped by plod. Almost certainly your bike would not be insured if it were nicked or you had an accident.
My mates GSXR1000 track bike had the daytime MOT. If I remember correctly he had number plate light, rear light, rear brake light and the horn. All indicators/mirrors/front light removed. I have not checked but I would be VERY SURPRISED if no brake/rear light is required. I would also consider it reckless if you did not have this (for your own sake).
I looked into this last year and Nelly is correct, massive grey area, plus 1/2 of plod and the MOT testers will give you conflicting instructions re reflectors and stop lights. My tester insists on no lights or indicators, fit a stop light by all means for your own safely, ride to the test station and cover with tape. As long as the is "no visible light" you are good (at least with them).
It isn't hard is it? Everything you need to know about the MOT requirements is here...... http://www.motuk.com/bike/1-3.asp#Menu_Top As the OP's bike doesn't yet need an MOT, then as far as I am concerned as long as it complies as though it does, it should be OK.
As others have said, there shouldnt be any problem. I used both my ZXR750L2 and my R1 for many many years with no headlamps, no indicators and race bodywork on it and had no problems, including getting pulled a few times by the boys in blue. Whilst it dont apply to the OP - The rules regarding Day light MOT`s may have changed over the years as my old tester used to say you only had to have brake light & rear reflector. However, after MOT`ing my 996 last week, my new MOT place says that he will happily issue a daylight MOT but you have to physically have no headlamps, no indicators, no brake light and either remove the switches off the handle bar or tape them up so you cant use them.
