Lets talk 2013 Touring, Pikes Peak and Touring GT screens

Discussion in 'Multistrada' started by Phantomfighter, Apr 2, 2013.

  1. + 1 for the custom earplugs an excellemt investment

  2. I use Shure SE115's. They double as noise cancellation plugs as well as headphones if you want some tunes on long, boring Autobahns.

  3. Following with some interest . My view to date has been just to get on with it and enjoy the bike. Nevertheless improvement in the wind buffeting and noise would really be a bonus on a great bike. Wonder if anyone has been able to try the screen on the Grantourismo yet? Also wonder if Astec is planning to put into production the spacers for the 2013 Multi?

  4. Why should we be talking about 2 bit spacers on a 15k bike when they have known about the problem since its conception and the designers have had 3 years to adapt a bit of clear plastic. Beggars bloody belief and my order will be put on hold until I get to the bottom of this.

  5. Ditto. Until a firm solution to the issues of wind deflection and "buzzing" from the screen is resolved, I won't be changing my '11 bike.
I look forward to a test ride on the Caponord, GS12 and the 1190 KTM as well. If one of them has an effective screen, a comfortable seat and good tank range that is most likely where my cash will go next year.

  6. Just an update on experience on a 2013 on a Touring S with 800 miles on the standard screen and 300 miles with the GT screen. The new screens are much better than the 2010 ones! I haven't felt any buffeting from either the standard or the GT screen. The ability to move the screen on the move is VERY useful. However I do think that both screens could be quieter, looking at the screen mountings I think spacers will be difficult to fit for either screen due the curvature of the screen and the angle of the bolts. In my opinion I think that both screens are missing that top curved lip that deflects the wind upwards, maybe aftermarket screens will have the lip. Could it be that Ducati took looks over function? Possible solution is an adjustable screen extension may try that soon. The above is my experience and opinion - everyone else will be different due to height, helmet type, etc etc.

PS The rest of the bike is also better than the 2010 model I had, Dual spark engine is great, Sachs suspension (DSS) gives a super smooth ride, LED headlamps are excellent. Overall the best bike around for me.

  7. I am surprised at this thread. When I tried the 2013 after having owned a 2011 I was so impressed with the fairing/screen improvements (plus engine) that I ordered one right away. I get the feeling that many that are rubbishing the 2013 set-up haven't even had a test ride! I believe that Ducati HAVE been working very hard at improvements and for me their work has paid off.

I am 6' 2" and found the 2013 vastly better than both the 2011 MTS and 2008 GS that I had owned previously. I had also found that the K75, ST1100, K1200RS and R1200ST of years past also had loads of noise and buffeting and I spent most of my ownership of these otherwise great bikes trying different screens with little success.

Of those that have actually ridden both the new and older MTS how did they compare for you? And what bikes are actually significantly better? Even the R1200 RT "best tourer" screen does not work better than the 2013 MTS for me.

I have yet to find a bike with a screen/fairing that is as quiet as a naked bike - thats the price you pay for the protection from the wind-blast and weather IMO. Screens are very personal and a few millimetres here and there seems to make a vast difference so try the bike yourself rather than listen to me or others - you may be pleasantly surprised. I always wear moulded ear-plugs by the way.

  8. VeetWin we crossed so my post does not take account of your comments.

Very constructive and hepfull they are too, by the way.

  9. I don't mean to come across as rude in my post.

I have made this thread as I OWN the bike and am riding it. I have made this thread as I have still after 3 weeks of ownership, still have ringing in my left ear from the battering from the riding I have done. I made this thread to hopefully find a solution that I am experiencing through the knowledge and other peoples usage of different screens. Yes I ride with ear plugs and have tried at the moment 2 different helmets with the same ear battering issue.

  10. Still running in speeds but IMO the PP screen works best in the lowest position and causes buffeting when raised. I have not tried the standard screen and not likely too !
Schuberth C3 I use and unless doing a big trip no ear plugs, and very pleased with how quiet it is especially being a flip !
probably a personal choice in the end.
phantomfighter how near to being run in ?

  11. I've used the large PIG screen and Ermax screen with Palmer frame on the old, as well as the stock screen on the 2013.

The 2 screens were excellent for eliminating face blast. The new screen has less body buffering.

I'm 5'10 with the low seat and Airhawk cushion (which kinds of bring it back to normal seat height. But no numb bum!)

In general, I can understand the comments. At 6'2, I suppose you're always getting head buffeting no matter the height of screen available (except with the Ermax and Palmer frame, I had to drop it down!). The new screen is wider and more raked. There is more head buffeting and ringing. But less on the body. Overall though, I could hear my music piped through my Sena SMH10 better. I wear moulded ear plugs too. (got to be careful about sealing).

But overall, I appreciate the new screen more. The tall screens actually obstruct vision when they get dirty or wet. Which is often!

Also, they compel me to sit backwards more. The higher wind deflection means I get windblast at the top of my helmet. So I do actually get blown around a bit still.

The new screen although more raked does seem to be more buffeting, but overall, head feels steadier. Also I can lean forward more. Especially when I drop it down, I can really lean over the bars and ride it motard style. Combine with the other upgrades, the whole 2013 just feels so much sharper and sportier.

So its a bit horses for courses. Its not perfect, but I appreciate it for what it is. I do think a lot of work has been put in. And I feel the general direction of the 2013 is to improve its sportiness. And so I can understand why the screen isn't taller. Never tried the GT screen, but might have a go with the GT during the strada tour and see. I do know a guy that's got it and says it is better. My dealer's impression is that generally, people are going for the shorter rather than taller screens.

So Phantomfighter, it may be counterintuitive, but try dropping the screen height and also adjust your riding position. Crouch forward a bit more.

    ps. I love the 2013!

  12. Ive ordered the Schuberth C3 Pro so I am hoping that will help. Im up to around 360 odd miles at the moment, would like to have done more but haven't had the chance to use it more yet. I have been doing alot of tinkering, learning how the pin works. Fitted a roadhawk camera under the nose, wired up the Sat Nav, fitted the painful to fit front mudguard extender, battery charger attachment and a new lowered seat. Im so tempted to get the full termi when I get the service done but will have to wait and see. How about you?

Thanks for the info. I am also thinking that the shorter Pikes Peak screen would be the way to go. I hear that people take a large screen on bigger travels and pack a small screen for their destination. I would like to try the GT screen to see if any improvement.

  13. Had all my upgrades ordered and fitted by dealer on sale so as to save myself the trouble and labour cost for fitting. Only bit of labour was for the full Termi.

Basically wanted the GT stuff but its not in Red! So kitted out a Red Touring.

Decided didn't need taller bars, screen (discussion with dealer) and fog lights.

Went for slightly more expensive but lighter and nicer-looking Touratech engine bars and front cylinder cover, top box, full Termis, low seat. They knew what I needed and persuaded/threw in Rizoma water-pump guard, R&G fork sliders, oil-cooler and radiator covers. Pleasantly surprised to see extra bling.

Oh, one other upgrade which they thought was frivolous but I felt essential (had it on my last Multi); handsfree fuel cap.

Also ordered hasndlebar bag (for those days in full leathers. Yes, I'm an optimist!), and top box liner. Latter was more expensive than the Givi, but turns out to be solid quality. Could be a bag in its own right.

Termis and some other Touratech stuff fitted at first service. Was told better to let it run in first as stock map less fussy.

  14. Sounds very nice indeed. Have you uploaded any pictures of your bike? I would like to add the sort of parts that you have added but my bike will mainly stay on the road so Im not sure how far I need to go with the protection on the parts. I have the R&G fork protectors but thats about it at the moment.

  15. Haven't had time to get it cleaned and fully-dressed. Full fitment only on Thursday. Might do that on sat and upload.

Nah, I'm not an off-road guy either. Forgot to mention I got my dealer to swap the Scorps for the PR3s. Never wanted to ride on those crap again!

Its for the low speed drops. Parking, get knocked over by knobs etc. Could do with just frame sliders or the R&G crash bungs.

Waterpump protector quite useful as it does stick out a bit and if damaged means bike is unrideable.

I think the R&G bungs go across the frame like the crash bars. Means that the bar takes the impact instead of transferring to frame. Generally the trellis and Ducs are quite strong. Still...

Front cylinder and oil/rad guards are pretty useful. Radiator itself can get bent. Real pig to clean too. Front cylinder is a stone chip away from getting a hole. Having said that, My old multi which I had for almost 3 years didn't have that problem (whew!)

You can go overboard with things. The guy at the dealer I mentioned also added a custom made front cylinder head guard. Then there's the swing arm sliders etc. Generally at the rear, the subframe and passenger hangers take the impact more.

Best protection? Touratech Zega pannier brackets +/- boxes. Yes, they're meant to function like training wheels. Yes, very OTT. Decided I dun print money to go offroading on a multi...

If you live round London, welcome to meet up/come over and have a look. Going down to dealer possibly this sat. They're doing a demo day. Welcome join and explore accessories.

  16. I have gone from a stock screen on my 2011 Sport combined with an Arai, to a PP carbon screen on the same bike with a Shoei. World of difference, problem well and truly solved.

  17. Any joy yet? I take delivery of my 2013 model on Friday and I've asked the dealer to fit a GT screen. Hope I haven't made a mistake!

  18. I don't think you can make a mistake with this bike or screen, its simply sublime! I guess we are trying to strive for screen perfection lol

  19. GREAT NEWS!!

Update: I have just received my lovely Matte Schuberth C3 Pro helmet and took it for a run around London. There are not many places to take it to get the wind rushing in central London, but had a quick M40 run and am hugely impressed.

I am not getting the ear battering from before. (Arai Chaser). There is noise but only minimal and no battering. I did manage some unquotable speeds with screen in lowest and highest, and it feels really great. I did have to stop to reinsert the foam ear plug but after that I'm a happy chappie. I am now a Schuberth convert.

Can't wait to try more but feel I have got an important step closer. Just wish I had got the lid before I buggered my left ear up a couple of weeks ago.

  20. I tried the C3 and it just wouldn't fit me. Im between sizes i Schuberth fit clearly and friends have said the same. So undoubtedly a very good lid but be careful on fit. I went for the Shoei flip instead and that fits like a glove and noise non existent, way better than my Arai.

For reference, I'm a large fit Arai and Shoei. Large in Schuberth way too small, X Large too big!
