If you looked at tyre wear on a large number of the same bike you'd end up with a bell curve distribution. Sinister's data point would be right at one end. On the other, those who somehow manage to rip their tyres to shreds in less that 1000 miles. I'd be delighted to get 12'000 kms out of a tyre but for a sports tyre I just don't see how it's done. What wears the tyre is acceleration and braking or high temperature use (high speeds on motorways for a long time). The point being made is that to get a very high mileage out if a sports tyre is essentially impossible if the performance in terms of motor and brakes of the performance bike is being exploited. It is possible to have a 150 bhp machine but never use more than 50 bhp. If you were going to ride everywhere within the letter of the law, that's probably what would happen. With a bike like Sinister's and a 12k km tyre life I think my project for 2014 would be a little tutored track time ( not necessarily on the Ducati).
Tyres are a given shape for a reason. The point is there will be wear on those tyres after that distance but it will all be slap bang flat in the centre of the tyre……..you will then get an edge appear where ever the limit of his cornering has been. That will become a peak if you continue across the face of the tyre, and should he ever venture beyond that peak there will be a very minimal amount of grip contact patch connecting him to the floor!
my848 has 2000mls, sc's on it and are verging on illegal, i ride it like a beginner. i would like to change the tyres soon, i have some nice twistys about 5 miles from my house on my daily commute and twice the back has kickd out on these bends, possibly suspension set up. i have Michelin power pure on my multistrada very good, any experience on the 848.
Here is my tire with 12K kms on it, I think that I only have 1/2 a season left...time to get a new set!
Ummm that's the only set of tires since I have bought the bike...so I don't have a receipt for new tires if that's what you are thinking!
I have no reason to bullshit anyone, if you look at all my updates don't you think that I would posted it up if I had bought a new set of tires? That is the original set from July 21 2012
As you can see they are a little squared off in the center due to highway riding here, there isn't very many curves or twisty roads here in Canada unlike Europe & our season starts from April or May depending on the snow until October or November
Who knows but I am surprised that they have lasted this long myself, I know I am not an aggressive rider but I ride it everywhere during the nice weather because I enjoy it, it also does depends on the road surfaces also because that does play a factor, you guys over in Europe have a lot of cobble stone & that takes a toll on your tires, our roads here are very smooth!
I'm not going to doubt you but I'm shocked at 12k's I do about 3000- 4000 miles a year and will go through 2 rears no problem
Cobblestones? there are a few miles in Belgium and France (Paris Roubaix - France cycle race etc). That cannot be considered as a majot factor. We do have bends though (another misconception with the USA is that they have none) Anyway, that does look like a 12K tyre (12 Kilometers)
Yes France has them all over, I was speculating about Britain, I don't know...I have never been there but when I was in Paris in October the streets there are filled with them, I thought that it would be the same for you guys! We have long straight boring roads here lol!
Srm...nope, wrong on this one. I have worn the front on an 848 in less than 1500 miles, rear shot by 2k, all on the road. There is t much rubber on the centre of these things and have seen tyres go from just legal to threadbare in 100 miles on the rear, all straightine riding stuff
