Optimate Sae's on all three of mine...fuck it...hangs out the side on all 3 - dont have to take anything off to get to them...
I use CTEK chargers on all mine. Use their Lithium version on the Speciale. Wire a quick-connect directly to the battery and run it to somewhere out of the way, but accessible. CTEKs seem to look after the battery well
The dealer routed mine next to the tank, sits behind the fairing but easy to access by popping the Velcro.
From memory, there is a horizontal bolt and nut that locks the left and right sides of the sub-frame together. You need to loosen it. To get to the bolt you need to remove all of the black under-tail plastic. This frees up the central plastic housing enough to squeeze the SAE socket through. Btw I ended up ditching the Optimate DDA adapter. I somehow blew the 7.5A fuse on that circuit. And was concerned about damaging the pins in the DDA connection. So decided it was far safer to run a dedicated line directly to the battery rather than risk connecting through the Canbus and potentially taking out unknown electronics. I also got fed up with unlocking and removing the black tail piece. Decided to buy an Optimate O-11 heavy duty SAE pigtail, cut off the o-ring terminals and solder on some 15A cable so it could run the full length of the bike. I used some gold coloured basalt thermal insulation sheath which you can see where it's poked in between the tank and frame. This runs up to the start of the Optimate lead which is near the DDA socket. From that point I added some black plastic spiral wrap to protect against rubbing and give the lead a bit more body. To stop the ends of the basalt sheath from fraying I used a small length of heat shrink tubing (the type with glue inside). The Optimate socket lies in the top of the left side of the tail. Inconspicuous and convenient. And you don't need to loosen the chassis bolt since it doesn't live in the boot. I definitely prefer the rugged SAE connector on the bike and I like the rubber weather cover on the Optimate lead. But I needed an SAE to CTEK adapter to mate with my charger. (I like the CTEK 5A Lithium charger and its charging algorithm seems to be among the best but really dont like the flimsy plastic CTEC plugs.) So that is what you can see in the pic below.
Ctek. Pig-tail endpoint is under the brake lever perch. The cable follows the brake light cables back under the front of the bike to where the battery.
