Lithium Battery - A Good Alternative?

Discussion in 'Hypermotard' started by pisquano, Oct 16, 2015.

  1. 800g for the Magneti Marelli battery in my 999s, compared to 3.5kg for the original :grinning:

  2. Are they bollocks. LiOn batteries are nothing new. They've been out years. All charged batteries should be treated with respect, there is a lot of stored energy. Stick to manufacturers recommendations and you'll be fine.
    I'm a LiOn convert btw. They're gr r r eat!

  3. Ok ok. I like how we are unable to reach a solid conclusion here

  4. I went for the Magneti Marelli for my MV F4 but bought direct from an Italian supplier (not through Ebay) - I'm sure it was only £80 ish delivered. Just google and you should find some web sites. All good so far, others on here have bought the same with no bad reports as yet...

  5. Thanks Exige! you just saved me £15! ordered from CarpiMoto

  6. I received my Lithium battery (MMY12B - Magneti Marelli Lithium Battery MMY12B) - It lasted a couple of weeks and now does not seem to have enough power to turn over the engine. The battery test button says it's fully charged, the dash battery charge indicator says 12.5... but it won't even turn over once. I've just sent CarpiMoto and email to see if they can help.

  7. Oops.

  8. Well, I'd never heard of a bad report until now :Wideyed:

  9. I fitted exactly the same one a few weeks ago. Perhaps I should go and start the bike..........

  10. After doing a bit more research, I won't be buying a lithium battery without a BMS - so I'm gonna go for the EarthX.

  11. Do the factory fitted Lithium batteries have a BMS (1299 Pani I think)? I would suggest that if you have to get complicated with stuff like that then it is far easier and cheaper to use a standard battery. Even the nearly 3 kg weight saving is worth nothing if you cannot feel it, and I can't feel any difference. But thinking about it that is only the same weight as 4 litres of fuel and I can't feel the difference in that either.

  12. Gosh...

  13. I had a Shorai one on my 999 a few years ago.... brilliant, a must if you ride in winter... my bike would NEVER start in sub zero conditions, with the Lithium it cranked over every time strongly... didn't notice the weight on the bike but to hold it the difference is amazing...

  14. I would never listen to what salesmen tell me when they are trying to sell me something, especially a US salesman. Do you have any independent sources that say BMS is essential? I wonder if OEMs have that.

  15. Google it, there are plenty of user reviews on the web.

  16. Yeah very frustrating. Thought I was upgrading, probably should have just stuck with OEM. I also don't have a lithium charger, only a CTEK standard charger with a motorbike setting, so I can't recharge it.

Exige do you think your start cables might fix the issue? Even if I go back to an original battery, at least your cables will still have a positive impact. From your website, it seems you don't have them for the 796 Hyper yet?

The Battery Management Systems (BMS) page of information made my brain hurt and got lazy and didn't ready ti all... the EarthX made my eyes water :)

  17. You can use a car charger on the lithium battery if you are stuck, I was told to first charge on a car charger.
