1200 Luggage Mount Failure

  1. Craneguy, glad you're sorted. Ended up getting my dealer to replace the lug as didn't want to break anything. As it it happens I've now traded the bike in for a new Honda Crosstourer. First and last Ducati I'm afraid.

  2. It seems you are getting it sorted but if your dealer has never heard of the issue then where have they been. I first raised this http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/dvt-panniers.33414/#post-578209 early last year and plenty of folks have had a problem. Some have even been broken by dealers on delivery.
    As I said at the time - if you are travelling far and wide I suggest taking something to get you out of trouble.

  3. Good idea. Would an epoxy adhesive be good backup? (as well as cargo straps)
     
  4. I'm no adhesive chemist but I would say not for two reasons. First, you don't know if it's going to fail again so you are going to need extra support anyway. Second, the tip can break off inside the seat mount and then you've got to get the little b'std out again. Gaffer tape and huge cable ties ... and if the pannier doesn't break you can always use them in the bedroom :grinning:
     
  5. Hahah. Yeah the tab was difficult to get out. I ended up pushing it up with cardboard from underneath and grabbing it with needle tweezers. As to the cable ties...stop being cheap and buy her some proper furry handcuffs. :-D
     
  6. What is it with Riders, are they trained to lie or not. If they are, their training isn't very good, as they are very easy to catch out.
     
  7. In fairness they did call me back before I had a chance to show them the proof. All dealers seem to immediately pooh-pooh any mention of online forums too.
     
  8. Not all dealers crane guy, some actually frequent the forums :)

    As for these mounts, out of interest which ones bolt on, front or rear ?
    Is there an updated part ?
    I wonder if it's worth considering carrying spare ones if going on a long trip to get out of trounle...
    I know it shouldn't be necessary, but better than having to bodge a repair IMO.

    I think it's only the rear that breaks and that can be bolted on. On another forum it looks like the part has been reinforced with metal but it isn't clear whether the metal goes in to the lug that slides inside the seat panel - and that's where it breaks.
    You would need to carry a pair. There's also a suggestion on the other forum that it's not a straightforward change - will depend on individual's ability.
    I would have a look at my panniers but as you know, I don't have them anymore!

  10. I agree with Pete1950... Mine were replaced, but I'm unconvinced the new ones are any better. When removing a pannier I now get my thigh against the front of the pannier and exert gentle pressure - avoiding it falling back into engagement and ensuring it is as far out as can be before moving th pannier away. 12 months on and it works fine... but still a weak link and unimpressed with the design Mr Givi/Ducati!

  11. Both of the rear lugs on my MTS panniers broke whilst touring in Spain recently and I would not now attempt to remove a loaded pannier from my bike. I've reported this to the dealer and they are looking into the matter, but I'm told that this is the first they've heard of the problem. I'll let you know the outcome.

  12. Funny. It's always the first time the dealer has heard of any issue. You could walk in and tell them you've got a flat tyre and they'd probably tell you it's the first time anyone has ever had that.

  13. Sorry to hear that the lugs broke, but they don't just break by themselves. Presumably some person must have grabbed hold of the panniers and wrenched at them hard enough to snap off the lugs. I wonder who it was, and why they would do that?
     
  14. They're very easy to break, and Ducati have acknowledged this by reinforcing the lugs. Mine said they hadn't heard of too, but replaced my broken one without an issue.
     
  15. The weakness of the injection moulded MTS rear pannier latch has been addressed and Givi has modified the design to now include a strengthening steel insert. I wonder why they would do that ....
     
  16. Is the default replacement part the "new" reinforced one? Part number?
     
  17. Yes. The dealer will install the upgraded part. The original part number has been 'retired'

My on-line research shows that the part number of the original Right Hand replacement lug was SKU69812321 but this is no longer available from Ducati because it has been superseded by SKU 69812322A (Right Reinforced Bracket.) There should also be a Left Reinforced Bracket, but I haven't been able to identify the part number for that item.
    I'm now waiting for my local dealer to obtain revised and strengthened plastic lugs so that I can repair my two rear panniers and I'll report in due course
     
  19. That sounds right. Installing them is apparently a cast-iron bitch though.
     
  20. It is. My dealer's mechanic was very unhappy about how long it takes. Apparently the replacement itself is easy; the hard and time-consuming part is getting at the bit to be replaced.

    I have to admit to wondering how much of the price-tag is advance padding for warranty recalls.
