It's handy to use a sat nav with speed camera warnings, even if you know how to get to your destination.
Ask yourself what happened to the safety camera partnerships? Why are "the police ones yellow and the others grey blue pink? Why are they not still working in partnership? Whats the point of having loads of safety cameras if a lot are switched off, wheres the sense in that If safety is to the fore?
Presumably this comes down to manpower. The safety partnerships are self funding or even profit making ? Film based Gatso's are probably no longer considered efficient ? Surely a "new generation" could work autonomously; just sit back and watch the revenue pour in ? Do tell Andy
The problem on motorways is bad driving; Not pulling over when the left lanes clear, last minute exit merchants, zig-zag over/undertakers, VANS, texters/emailers/film viewers while driving, etc. Doing 85-95mph in a well maintained car in good conditions and visibility is not a problem in my book. They can't of course design a device that can catch and fine the others so let's just fine the vehicles that we can catch. At the very least, fall inline with the EU 130kph/81mph and reduction in the wet. Do you remember a couple of years ago that they announced that they'd be clampng down on lane huggers and fining/penalty pointing offenders. Never happened did it?
Kirky, thats why i love driving around France and Spain most motorways are two lanes you overtake then get back over it works great and at 85mph in dry weather,
I enjoyed driving in France. In traffic, it was like a game of leapfrog. Overtake the guy in front, pull in, guy behind you over takes you and pulls in, rinse and repeat. Hilarious!
I was in lane 2 of an almost deserted 4 lane motorway late at night, a liveried X5 overtook me and flashed a red sign at me telling me to "move left after overtaking". There was a move in parliament to increase motorway speed limits to 80 mph but it was dropped when no MP was prepared to face the family of the next person to be killed on our motorways. Despite the Uk motorways being some of the safest roads in Europe.
Sounds like Italy except you don't mention keeping hand pressed on horn whilst carrying out the maneuver
All the variable speed cameras on the m62 between rothwell and Brighouse are working. Even when the variable speed limit is switched off, they still work, flash and fines received within a week.
The British get confused when they build 4/5 lane motorways; Firstly, our inherent desire to queue, then the understanding that the far LH lane is for cars exiting the m/way, the next lane is for 56mph trucks, the next lane is for 57mph overtaking trucks, then 70mph lane sitters and finally the outside lane where we like to queue. Simples!
Driving in Italy i found there right up your arse and in a black Merc and all cars have a dent or two on them.
Leaving a gap in front of you on an Italian motorway is an invitation for the guy behind to get even closer.
I found driving up the a2 (faro to Lisbon) in Portugal amusing unless driving it at night. Very rarely will you see a car doing any less that 150 kph. 180 being the norm! And only ever saw 1 car get pulled over in over 7 years of using it. And he was probably only pulled over because he was Spanish.
I've driven and ridden over there since I was 12yrs old, never had a problem. They are no way as mad as everyone makes out and I see far worse on the roads here.
