I understand how you would think that would be the case but as said, the bike could idle happily all day and if set up rich then would still have sooty plugs.
4) How can I check ignition pickup or crankcase sensors? Replacement is easiest. Same as 1.2 Fiat Punto. Across the pins should read 860Ω ± 10%. If the are failing the cylindrical part of the body is often swollen. A faulty CPS will affect both cylinders or it won't run at all. The punto CPS is 2 wire, my 1098 is 3 wire
Some variants may be, I should have been more specific. Fiat Punto 1.2 8V, same as this. Here is the spec sheet for the Bosch version.
Thanks for all the advice, guys! I will open the tank and check all the pipes and replace fuel filter first. Will update you....
Thanks again everyone! Took the filler cap and rim off, can take the filter out but wanted to take all the pump and strainer etc out to clean/replace too. How exactly do I take the pump assembly out. Have read some posts which say just pull it out (in which case is it easy to reseat after), and others which refer to clips. It’s pretty fiddly trying to work out what’s going on down there and my arms are a bit too fat..... Many thanks!
Obviously it's always a good idea to change the filter but given that the problems you had started during a downpour, I can't help wondering if it's simply water in your fuel, in which case just draining the old fuel out and refilling with fresh would cure it. Have you checked the front stick coil yet? It's notoriously vulnerable to water from the front wheel, the plug well can easily fill with water. Try disconnecting the front plug to see if it makes any difference to how the motor runs. Easy, simple things first I reckon...
The vertical pot spark plug recess is succeptable to filling with water after a downpour/wash too. A liberal squirt of WD40 cures this malaise. Plus the rubber on the plug cap seal gets hard over time and causes the leak. Runs fine until you go out on it, then misfires, pot drops out and you struggle home.
Sure, makes sense. Just picked up the filters etc and the tank is virtually empty so will prob swap these over anyway, try to clear any gunk from the tank and refill. Will also check front coil again but when I initially checked/replaced plugs I didn’t notice any wet/damp. Cheers!
Access to the filter, the fuel pump and fuel lines is by removing the big flange in the base of the tank. Make sure you have a new o-ring before refitting as the o-ring has invariably swollen and won't go back in.
H Hi. Mine doesn’t have the flange under tank, need to go through cap, removing wider ring and reaching inside....
Spoke to the dealers today, they said just need to unclip the mount holding the pump....will give it a go
I had similar problems on 900 SSIE. Turned out the Throttle position sensor had been affected by a very heavy downpour. Good luck.
I had a wire/connector between ignition module and coil break on my Monster, it started OK and seemed to idle OK but had no power. Didn't even sound that different when running on one cylinder only, biggest give away was the front cyl exhaust was cold as it wasn't firing plus it wouldn't do more than 50mph. The core of the wire had broken but the plastic sheathing was holding it in the connector so it didn't look broken, if it had been intermittently working it would have been more difficult to diagnose though.
