Back in day i'd the MK1 in Mars Red, it was a one owner vehicle with just 20,000 miles on the speedo, then i purchased the MK2 in Alpine White / BBS wheels, again a one owner machine with 7,500 miles, both were fantastic but it was the MK1 that made me a hooligan......happy days.!
I made the silly mistake of buying a 1.6 Mk1 for the same nostalgic reason. Big mistake - I should have bought the later (Y or A reg) 1.8 as the 1.6 was disappointing! I had a brand new 1989 (G-reg) Mk2 big bumper as a company car, and it was the first model to run on unleaded. It felt restricted - never as horny as my previous D-reg. Mk2. Understand the nostalgia tho' but make sure you get a good test drive...
Our local VW dealer has a MK1 in their showroom, jeez they look small now but still a great looking car, me and my brothers had MK2’s and VR6’s. I also had a Jetta GTi 16v, quicker than the Golf, allegedly ! Personally I’d go for a MK2 16V big bumper in ( forest ) green with BBS alloys. Always wanted a Corrado Storm.
Massive respect for Graham, owner of the 3 cars, "Tarantula" wheels - despite having 9 spokes. Made me want one (again), I have to say. https://vwgolfmk1.org.uk/index.php?page=iotds&type=view&id=ag-2022&wide=1&keep_session=104490684
